WASHINGTON, DC: The US women’s national hockey team has declined an invitation from Donald Trump to attend his upcoming State of the Union address, opting instead to honor previously scheduled commitments following their Olympic triumph.

A spokesperson for USA Hockey confirmed the decision, emphasizing the team’s appreciation for the recognition.

“We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal winning US Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate. They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment,” the statement added.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Invitation after joke by Trump to Men's hockey team

The invitation followed comments Trump made Sunday night during a congratulatory call with the US men’s hockey team after their own gold medal victory.

During the call, Trump said he would also have to invite the women’s team. “I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that,” the president said.

“If I didn’t invite them, I do believe I probably would be impeached,” he added jokingly.

The remarks came just days after the women secured their gold medal with a win over Canada in Thursday’s Olympic final, a matchup that renewed one of international hockey’s fiercest rivalries.

Hockey teams golden sweep over Canada

The women’s championship victory over Canada capped a dramatic Olympic run and delivered another signature moment for the program, which has long been a dominant force on the world stage.

Their male counterparts followed suit on Sunday, defeating Canada in overtime to claim gold in their tournament as well. The back-to-back victories marked a celebratory weekend for American hockey, with both national teams finishing atop the podium.

Trump extended the State of the Union invitation to the men’s team shortly after their overtime win. It remains unclear whether the men’s team plans to attend.

The State of the Union address, one of the most high-profile events on the political calendar, often includes guests from across the country to spotlight notable achievements. Presidential invitations to championship sports teams have long been a tradition.
