Trump’s $72 Billion Immigration Bill Stalls In Congress
Trump’s $72 billion immigration bill just hit a major wall in Congress — and this time, the resistance is coming from inside the Republican Party.
The GOP wanted the bill passed before Memorial Day. Instead, Republican leaders delayed the vote until June after lawmakers erupted over a new DOJ “anti-weaponization” fund and controversial security spending tied in part to Trump’s White House ballroom plan.
The bill is huge.
According to the writeup, it includes $38.2 billion for ICE, $26 billion for Border Patrol and CBP, $5 billion for DHS, and $1.5 billion for the DOJ. Supporters see it as a long-overdue investment in immigration enforcement and border security.
The Justice Department has said the $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund is meant to compensate people who claim they were unfairly targeted by the government, and that the fund would include reporting and audit safeguards. But after a meeting with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Senate Majority Leader John Thune admitted Republicans still had deep concerns.
