Chuck Schumer Says DHS Problems Go Beyond Leadership After Noem Exit
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer responded to Kristi Noem's firing with a blunt "good riddance" on X, but quickly pivoted to warn that the crisis at DHS runs far deeper than one person. "The problems at DHS go much deeper than any one person," Schumer wrote. "The President must rein in ICE and end the violence." His message signaled that Democrats have no intention of easing their demands in the ongoing DHS funding standoff, now stretching past its twentieth day, simply because Noem has been replaced by Sen. Markwayne Mullin. Schumer's stance aligns with the broader Democratic position that the department's issues are rooted in policy, not personnel. Democrats have laid out a list of ten demands to reform ICE conduct — including body camera mandates, a ban on face masks during operations, and stricter warrant requirements — as conditions for reopening the department. Immigration advocacy group America's Voice called Noem's departure "not accountability, just a reshuffling of enablers," while DNC Chair Ken Martin labeled her tenure a "stain on American history." With Mullin's confirmation still pending and the DHS shutdown straining TSA, FEMA, and cybersecurity operations, the pressure on both parties to reach a deal is only intensifying.
