Footage shows Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino warning protesters that “gas is coming!” before lobbing a canister that released green smoke into a Minneapolis protest crowd on Wednesday, January 21.
Video captured by Ben Luhmann shows Bovino struggling to deploy the canister before tossing it at the crowd of protesters. The green smoke then blows back into his direction as he continues to direct the crowd to “get back.” The Minneapolis Star Tribune, citing witnesses, reported that the smoke caused several protesters in the Lowry Hill East neighborhood to cough and vomit. Replying to this footage on X, Bovino said: “Violent anarchists cleared, mission continued!!” Luhmann provided additional footage showing one of the canisters being picked up. Storyful has identified the product as a Pocket Tactical Saf-Smoke Green Smoke Grenade. The smoke grenade will burn for “approximately 20-40 seconds,” according to its manufacturer, Defense Technology. The Star Tribune reported that federal agents also used smoke and chemicals on protesters in an earlier altercation near West 28th Street and Blaisdell Avenue, where a man pinned down by officers was sprayed in the face with bright orange chemical irritant.
