'Stop the Raids! Stop Deportation!': New Yorkers March in Protest to Minneapolis ICE Sh*oting
New Yorkers turned out en masse for an emergency protest in response to the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Wednesday, January 7. Footage from Ben Von Klemperer shows demonstrators gathering at Foley Square before marching down Manhattan, chanting “Stop the Raids! Stop deportation!” In a statement posted to social media, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said: “ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them- an act of domestic terrorism. An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers. The alleged perpetrator was hit and is deceased.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the DHS version of events “bulls***t” and said the woman was shot by an ICE agent “recklessly using power.” Frey demanded that ICE leave Minneapolis immediately.
