Minnesota Said It Was Fighting Fraud — Feds Now Say The Problem Ran Much Deeper

28 May 2026
Federal investigators say Minnesota’s fraud investigations may be exposing something much larger than isolated abuse. The debate first gained attention after a heated exchange between Gov. Tim Walz and Rep. Nancy Mace over autism-related spending and oversight. Days later, Walz defended Minnesota’s approach, arguing that hearing about fraud was proof the state was actively prosecuting it. But the story kept growing. The DOJ later announced charges against 15 defendants tied to alleged fraud schemes targeting more than $90 million in taxpayer funds across multiple Minnesota-managed programs. Assistant AG Colin McDonald warned that this was only the “beginning” of federal work in the state and described a “culture of fraud” taking root in some programs. Vice President JD Vance then broadened the issue nationally, outlining billions in suspected fraud uncovered by the administration’s task force — while sharing examples of Medicaid abuse that allegedly harmed vulnerable Americans. The political fallout has also intensified. DHS confirmed the arrests of Minnesota residents Shamso Ahmed Hassan and Hanaan Mursal Yusuf, accused of defrauding Medicaid out of more than $21 million. Meanwhile, controversy continues around the Feeding Our Future case, with Minnesota Republicans criticizing Rep. Ilhan Omar over document requests connected to committee inquiries. Omar has denied wrongdoing. President Trump has since framed the cases as evidence of wider government fraud and vowed further action. The bigger question now: Was Minnesota proof the system was working — or proof investigators believe the problem ran deeper than many realized? #Minnesota #Fraud #MedicaidFraud #Trump #JDVance #TimWalz #DOJ #Politics #USPolitics #GovernmentFraud #BreakingNews #TaxpayerMoney #NewsUpdate #America #PoliticalNews #MinnesotaNews #FraudInvestigation #SocialSecurity #Medicaid #FederalInvestigation
