“We’ve Given Unprecedented Support” — Hochul Pushes Back On Mamdani Demands
New York Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled a new state budget deal while defending her administration’s support for New York City, highlighting funding for subway safety, childcare programs, and new public safety measures.
The budget also includes tougher penalties for repeat speeding offenders, crackdowns on ghost guns and masked crimes, and restrictions tied to protests near houses of worship.
But the biggest flashpoint quickly became money. Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned that New York City’s multi-billion-dollar deficit cannot be solved without more help from Albany, while Hochul pushed back by arguing the state has already provided “unprecedented” support to the city.
Mamdani also warned that without additional funding, New Yorkers could eventually face property tax hikes, budget cuts, or reserve withdrawals to close the growing deficit gap.
The debate is now shaping into a much larger political fight over how much taxpayers should continue covering for New York City’s financial struggles.
