Trump’s Taiwan Weapons Pause Sparks Bigger China Questions
For decades, US arms sales to Taiwan have carried one clear message: Taiwan must be able to defend itself as China continues claiming the island. But now a planned weapons package worth up to $14 billion is under scrutiny after a senior US official said some foreign military sales are being paused to protect American munitions readiness.
Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao told lawmakers the pause is meant to make sure the US has the weapons it needs for Operation Epic Fury. He said foreign military sales would continue when the administration decides they are necessary.
Trump recently met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and said the Taiwan issue was “very well in hand.” He also said he would speak with Taiwan’s President Lai before making a decision on the weapons package.
