‘No Paychecks’: Senate Approves Kennedy Shutdown Proposal
Senator John Kennedy’s push to stop lawmakers from getting paid during federal government shutdowns has now received unanimous backing in the Senate.
Kennedy argued that if federal workers and Americans are affected when Washington stalls, senators should face that same pressure too. During his remarks, Kennedy said lawmakers’ paychecks should effectively stay “locked in a vault” until the shutdown ends.
He also joked that if he were “king for a day,” members of Congress wouldn’t even be allowed to leave Washington during shutdown negotiations.
The Senate has now unanimously backed the measure, putting new attention on congressional accountability during future shutdown fights.
