FDNY Rescue Turns Into Explosion Scene During Staten Island Fire
A Staten Island rescue mission turned into a deadly explosion scene — and New York is now waiting for answers.
Officials said the fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. on Richmond Terrace, where FDNY crews responded to a shipyard fire. The situation was already dangerous: two workers were reportedly trapped in a basement, and firefighters moved in to search.
FDNY officials said confined-space operations are extremely dangerous, and crews were still conducting searches when a second explosion occurred. Reports said more than 200 responders and roughly 70 fire and EMS units were called to the scene.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani called it a “complex, fast-developing emergency situation” and said first responders did what they always do: they ran toward danger so others could escape.
