Hantavirus Cruise Outbreak Leads Military Evacuation and British Army Air Drop, Americans Rescued
The hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has moved far beyond a routine health alert.
It has now triggered military evacuations, international quarantine plans, U.S. passenger repatriations, and a first-of-its-kind British Army airdrop onto one of the most isolated inhabited islands on Earth.
The ship arrived in Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands after three deaths and multiple confirmed cases linked to the Andes strain of hantavirus. WHO says the public risk remains low and has repeatedly stressed that this is not another COVID pandemic. But health officials are still taking major precautions because Andes virus has, in rare cases, shown limited human-to-human spread.
