UFC at the White House: Rubio and Dana White Sign Sports Diplomacy Deal But Trump Isn't Happy
The UFC’s first-ever White House event is moving forward, and now it has the backing of a formal sports diplomacy push from the State Department. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed an agreement with UFC CEO Dana White ahead of UFC Freedom 250, a major fight night planned for the South Lawn of the White House on June 14.
Rubio described the UFC as a major global platform that can help showcase American culture, discipline, courage, and competition. The agreement is expected to connect UFC athletes and the American private sector with public diplomacy efforts during what officials are calling the “decade of sport in America.” For supporters, it is a modern version of something the United States has done for decades: using sports to build relationships, strengthen global influence, and promote American values abroad.
UFC Freedom 250 will coincide with Flag Day, America’s 250th birthday celebrations, and President Trump’s 80th birthday. Trump, however, joked that people do not need to wish him a happy birthday because he is not exactly thrilled about the number.
