Virginia State University shooting suspect arrested after campus gunfire leaves 5 wounded

ETTRICK, VIRGINIA: A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting at Virginia State University that left five people wounded early Saturday, including one person in critical condition.

The suspect, identified as Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia, was arrested after police launched a manhunt for multiple suspects following the shooting near the university's Quad Annexes.

Harris is not a student at the university. Four of the five people wounded were also not students. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 23, but their identities have not been released.

Police obtained eight felony warrants for Harris, including charges of malicious wounding and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

He was taken to Chesterfield County Jail and is being held without bond, according to WTVR. Authorities said additional charges could be filed.

No possible motive has been publicly disclosed.

Five people wounded near Virginia State University dorms

The shooting was reported at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the university's Quad Annexes, close to campus residence halls.

When officers arrived, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside the dormitory area. The victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment. One person was critically injured, while the other four were expected to survive.

One of the injured, a student, has since been released from the hospital after receiving medical care.

Virginia State University police and Chesterfield County police were working together to determine what happened and identify everyone involved.

Virginia State University lockdown lifted after shooting

The university initially placed the campus under lockdown and urged students and others to stay away from the area while law enforcement worked the scene.

The lockdown was later lifted after officials said there was no immediate threat to the campus community.

“VSU Police and the Chesterfield County Police Department are actively investigating,” the university said, urging the campus community to follow instructions from law enforcement.

The university had earlier said authorities were searching for multiple suspects. Police later arrested Harris, but officials have not provided further details about the search for any additional suspects.

Virginia also saw an earlier campus shooting this year at Old Dominion University, where an attack targeting an ROTC group left an instructor dead and two others wounded.
