DAVOS, SWITZERLAND: A sudden health scare disrupted proceedings at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, January 21, after a mysterious odor spread through the main venue, triggering coughing among attendees and forcing an evacuation.

The incident occurred as global leaders, executives, and officials gathered for one of the summit’s most closely watched days.

According to multiple reports shared online, people inside the main WEF venue began coughing after noticing an unusual smell in the air. Within minutes, parts of the building were evacuated as a precaution, with confusion rippling through the crowd. The source of the odor was not immediately identified, and officials did not confirm what substance, if any, was responsible.

Attendees described a tense scene as security personnel and event staff moved quickly to clear sections of the venue.

While there were no immediate reports of serious injuries, the sudden evacuation raised alarms given the high-profile nature of the event and the number of world leaders present.

The incident quickly fueled online speculation, with some users expressing concern about safety in Europe.

“People are being EVACUATED from the main venue at the World Economic Forum, after a strange odor began causing people to cough,” one post read.

Another bluntly added, “Europe is unsafe.”

One viral reaction even referenced the US president directly, saying, “President Trump just needs to get back to the US ASAP.”

Davos evacuation disrupts Trump’s WEF speech

The evacuation occurred on the same day President Donald Trump arrived in Davos to address the World Economic Forum, delivering a message of confidence and defiance to global leaders.

Speaking before business and political elites, Trump declared that the US economy was outperforming grim predictions made by critics.

“The USA is the economic engine on the planet,” Trump told the audience. “You all follow us down, and you follow us up.”

He described the past year as an “economic miracle,” crediting his policies for growth he said few believed was possible. Trump also took aim at economists who had warned that his agenda would destabilize markets.

“Virtually all of the so-called experts predicted my plans to end this failed model would trigger a global recession and runaway inflation,” he said. “But we have proven them wrong.”

Defending tariffs and the US model

Trump said the purpose of his appearance was to explain “how we have achieved this economic miracle,” arguing that other countries could learn from the US approach. He again defended tariffs and aggressive trade pressure, policies that had drawn criticism from several allies ahead of his visit.
