Whoopi Goldberg calls Joe Biden 'acting president' amid hurricane relief efforts
Whoopi Goldberg stated, “People should just know, it is not easy to do what she's doing. Because she's still also the vice president. So she's still got other things she's supposed to be doing, as does our acting president, Joe Biden.”
FEMA's vital role in hurricane relief amid misinformation
The conversation quickly shifted to FEMA's crucial role in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The agency has been on the ground since before the storm made landfall, tirelessly working with state and local officials to deliver life-saving relief to affected communities.
While many Republican governors and mayors have praised FEMA’s response, misinformation regarding the agency's efforts has emerged from political opponents.
Critics have made unfounded claims that FEMA funds are being redirected to support illegal immigration initiatives.
Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin defend FEMA against misinformation
In response, Whoopi Goldberg firmly countered, “Not a dime of disaster relief has gone to resettling migrants or anybody else. It’s a bald-faced lie.” She encouraged the public to seek accurate information, noting that FEMA has set up a website to debunk these falsehoods.
Sunny Hostin, another co-host, shared insights on the actions taken during the Trump administration, where funds from FEMA were reportedly redirected to immigration enforcement.
“In 2019, the Trump administration...told Congress that it was taking $271 million from FEMA...to pay for immigration detention and temporary hearing locations for asylum seekers,” she explained.
Hostin emphasized that the Biden administration is providing significant aid, including a maximum of $42,500 for home repairs, contrary to claims that only minimal assistance was available.
The emotional toll of misinformation on hurricane relief efforts
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin shared, “This storm is one of the worst I’ve seen...The devastation, the loss of life, these people are suffering.”
She highlighted that misinformation has deterred volunteers from helping, complicating the relief efforts further.
Navarro added a critical note, reflecting on the emotional toll misinformation takes on affected individuals and the tireless work of FEMA employees who have left their families to assist those in need.
“This isn’t just the person running for the highest office of the land lying and shopping disinformation...It is the most evil thing he’s ever done,” she said.
