Will Jimmy Kimmel quit as talk show host on Jan 20? Rumors swirl he’s ‘not coming back’ after Trump’s win
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel was certainly not happy after Donald Trump’s unexpected victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. He even called the victory a "terrible night for women and children".
So after this incident, a rumor spread across social media claiming that the late-night host and a longtime Trump critic, would be canceling his show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' and moving to Canada on Inauguration Day, as per Snopes.
Viral post claims Jimmy Kimmel will quit as talk show host on January 20
A viral social media post on Facebook claimed "Jimmy Kimmel Show Will be Cancelled On January 20th, "I’m Leaving And Never Coming Back.""
The claim originated from a November 10 article on the website SpaceX Mania, which read, "In a post-election bombshell, Jimmy Kimmel has announced that 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' will air its final episode on January 20th, citing disillusionment with the United States after Donald Trump’s reelection and a “red wave” across the country. The late-night host, known for his biting political satire and monologues, is hanging up his microphone—and booking a one-way ticket to Canada."
The statement further read, ""I can’t believe I’m saying this", Kimmel said in a statement dripping with a mix of frustration and exhaustion, "But I’m done. It’s been a great run, but I’ve had enough. After January 20th, the show is over, and I’m moving to Canada for good. You can all catch me north of the border if you need me—but I’m not coming back"."
Jimmy Kimmel is not 'hanging up his microphone'
However, the claims are completely false and Jimmy Kimmel would not be canceling his show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' and moving to Canada on Inauguration Day.
This is mainly because SpaceX Mania explicitly describes most of its output as satirical, including the story about Jimmy Kimmel, as per Snopes. Online memes connected to the publication also state, in the image shared on social media, that the claim is fictional.
Moreover, there has been no official announcement by Kimmel himself or the makers of the show regarding him leaving the talk show.
Jimmy Kimmel expresses disappointment over Donald Trump's election win
Jimmy Kimmel shared his profound disappointment over the recent US presidential election outcome in a monologue on his late-night show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'.
Kimmel described the night as "the worst Taco Tuesday" of his whole life while fighting back tears and expressing frustration and concern over the election results.
Kimmel said in his monologue, "We had the choice between a prosecutor and a criminal, and we chose the criminal to be President of the United States. More than half of this country voted for the criminal who’s planning to pardon himself for his crimes. I guess this election wasn’t rigged."
Kimmel expressed sadness for those he believes will be most affected by the outcome, including women, children, immigrants, and those who depend on healthcare, social security, and other essential services, according to Variety.
He said, "It was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country go."
The host further added, "It was a terrible night for everyone who voted against him, and guess what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted for him too—you just don’t realize it yet."
