'Would be brilliant': Internet excited as Bryan Cranston teases possible 'Malcolm in the Middle' revival
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The ‘Argylle’ star Bryan Cranston recently appeared in an interview to promote his upcoming spy thriller where he hinted at the possible reunion of ‘Malcolm in the Middle’.
Cranston, 67, who played a father in the hit 2000s show ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ admitted he is still a father figure to his on-screen sons, especially to Frankie Muniz, 38, the child star who played the eponymous Malcolm.
Bryan Cranston opens up about reconnecting with Frankie Muniz
The show ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ ran successfully for seven years from 2000 to 2006. The fictional series documented the lives of a dysfunctional lower middle-class family and their antics.
While Cranston played the role of Malcolm’s father Hal, Jane Kaczmarek starred as the child’s mother, Lois.
Apart from Muniz’s son, the other TV sons of Cranston included Christopher Masterson (Frankie), Justin Berfield (Reese) and Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey).
The on-screen father had an emotional reunion with Muniz in December 2023 when the 38-year-old actor surprised him with mezcal from the Dos Hombres Mezcal - a company that he co-founded with Aaron Paul.
As Muniz approached Cranston with a case of mescal, the ‘Breaking Bad’ star became overwhelmed with emotion as he reached out to hug Muniz.
He recalled the emotional incident and shared with Entertainment Tonight, "Playing a father on television was easy for me because I'm a father in real life and, and so on Malcolm [in the Middle] for seven years, these boys were my boys.”
He continued, "And that doesn't stop when the camera stops. You still have this love and affinity for them.”
Even though he played the boys’ onscreen father, Cranston admits he developed a real-life paternal bond with the child actors.
He gushed about his co-actors, saying, “And I'm very very proud of them as now, adults. They're all adults and they're all doing very well.”
“And that makes me the happiest because they made it through the gauntlet of child actordom,” said the proud on-screen parent.
Cranston also pondered on helping the boys navigate through their childhood careers and prepare them for their life after the show.
Cranston said, "You could be set on the wrong path very easily," before adding, "So you have to have a lot of influence around them.”
He continued to talk about his job as a guiding force in their lives, saying, “I felt that when I was working with them that that's my job too. Is to talk to them.”
He continued, “You know, about how to grow up, how to behave, how to be respectful and especially to appreciate the moment they're in. It's hard for kids to really be able to understand that.”
Cranston continued to reminisce, "And now in retrospect, I talked to them all the time, and they're saying, 'Yeah, you know, I wish I had remembered, you know, the fun that we had.' I go, 'You do in your way as a child. It's OK.' Yeah, it was a lot of fun."
Bryan Cranston is ‘open’ to work in a ‘Malcolm’ reboot
However, he does not only want to reminisce about the past but also wants a ‘Malcolm’ reboot to happen.
Cranston said he has witnessed several fans urging him for a ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ revival, and he is up for it.
In the interview, Cranston said exuberantly, "It would be fun to explore now," before adding, "All these boys who are now grown-ups and on their own with kids of their own, and it'd be fun to explore that. I'm open to that."
“I'm going to lock it down,” continued Cranston.
Frankie Muniz reveals Bryan Cranston is 'getting everything rolling'
During a 2022 interview with Fox News, Frankie Muniz shared his experiences of revisiting the show with his wife Paige Price.
Muniz shared, "When I was filming the show, I obviously was a kid," before adding, "We did seven seasons, 151 episodes.”
He revealed, “I didn’t really watch the show when it was on, but I’ve now since watched the show with my wife.”
“We [watched] all 151 episodes… I realized, ‘Wow, that’s what we were making.’… I can separate myself from being on it and watching it as a fan. I would love to know what the family’s up to," shared an excited Muniz.
He further added, "I know Bryan Cranston is really into the idea and he’s kind of heading writing the script and getting everything rolling. So, there might be something. I would be down 100 percent."
He concluded at the end, "But I don’t know - we’ll see what happens.”
