Wrestling star Alan Vera dies at 33, leaves behind 'immeasurable' void after losing long battle for life
JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY: Alan Vera, a standout on the Greco-Roman wrestling national team, died on Monday, September 26, at the age of 33.
He died after battling complications from a sudden cardiac arrest that occurred during a soccer game earlier on July 29.

Alan Vera collapsed while playing soccer with friends in Jersey City, New Jersey according to an Instagram post from his club soccer team, New Jersey Wolves FC.

Despite surviving the initial incident, he succumbed to complications from an unexpected infection, as mentioned on a GoFundMe page organized to support his family.
Vera leaves behind his wife, two-time Olympic wrestler Elena Pirozhkova, and their newborn daughter, Alina, who was born earlier this summer.
The GoFundMe page describes how Vera fought to the very last.
"Despite fighting with every ounce of strength for the past two months, he could no longer endure the battle," the fundraiser stated. "While his passing brings a sense of peace knowing he is no longer suffering, the void left behind is immeasurable," it added.
The page also expressed gratitude for the support shown to Vera's family: "We are deeply grateful for the incredible outpouring of love, support, and generosity we've received throughout this difficult time."
USA Wrestling honors Alan Vera’s legacy
USA Wrestling executive director Rich Bender shared his condolences in a statement following Alan Vera’s passing.
"Our hearts have been broken. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Elena, Alina, and all of Alan’s family, as well as those who have known Alan," Bender said as per USA Today.
"The wrestling community mourns the loss of a great champion, whose incredible life impacted so many within USA Wrestling and around the world," he added.
As of Wednesday afternoon, more than $43,000 had been raised to support Vera's family.

USA Wrestling National Greco-Roman Coach Herb House also reflected on Alan Vera's influence.

"Ever since he came into my life in 2016, he has been a true leader, always ready to do anything for anyone in need," House added.
"His selflessness and dedication have made a lasting impact on me," House remarked further.
Vera, originally from Cuba, first competed for his homeland, securing four Cuban national championships and a Pan American title in 2016.
Later that year, he immigrated to the United States, sought US citizenship, and quickly became qualified to represent Team USA.
