NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: All eyes were on Zohran Mamdani as he took oath as the 112th New York City Mayor on Thursday, December 1. While the ceremony centered on the new mayor, attention also turned to his wife, Rama Duwaji, the city’s First lady.
Though she did not seek the spotlight, Duwaji’s presence stood out. Her style captured attention in a subtle, refined way, perfectly suited to the occasion. The outfit balanced elegance and approachability, leaving a quiet but memorable impression.
Rama Duwaji draws attention with chic and elegant inauguration style
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, impressed with her sophisticated style at the inauguration. The artist and new First Lady looked poised and memorable without overshadowing the event.
She wore a high-collared, chocolate-brown coat with a princess-line cut, trimmed with fur at the cuffs and hem, falling just below the knee. Duwaji paired it with tall lace-up Miista boots featuring block heels, blending comfort with style.
Her jewelry was minimal yet striking, with sculptural silver earrings, while she completed the look with natural makeup and a maroon manicure. Her short pixie haircut added a contemporary edge, perfectly complementing the outfit.
During a portion of the ceremony in an empty subway station near City Hall, Duwaji wore a black funnel-neck coat with a matching knee-length skirt and bold gold jewelry. The ensemble felt vintage yet playful while remaining elegant and fresh. Her confident style reflected both the historic moment and her personal fashion sensibility.
NYC First Lady pairs modern edge with timeless elegance in her outfit
“I think there are different ways to be First Lady, especially in New York,” said Rama Duwaji, a 28-year-old artist, in a December interview with New York magazine.
As New York City’s youngest First Lady, as well as its first Gen Z and first Muslim First Lady, Duwaji made a stylish impression at the inauguration, as noted by The New York Post.
For the ceremonial portion held shortly after midnight, she wore a funnel-neck, button-front black coat paired with a matching knee-length skirt. She accessorized with bold gold jewelry and Miista lace-up boots, combining elegance with modern flair.
