Amanda Seyfried says backlash over calling Charlie Kirk 'hateful' forced her to hire security
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Amanda Seyfried claims she was forced to get a bodyguard after making comments about slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. During an interview, Seyfried reflected on how public statements can have a major impact, especially after her remarks about the right-wing activist sparked backlash.
She said she can share her opinions, but did not expect the strong reaction. Seyfried also said she is not sorry for her comments. The actress added that, in order to protect herself and her family, she opted for security, including a bodyguard at the airport, which she described as a surprising experience.
Amanda Seyfried says she hired a bodyguard after backlash over Charlie Kirk's comments
During an interview with GQ Magazine, Seyfried said she was surprised by the backlash following her remarks about Kirk, which she described as “hateful.” The 'Housemaid' actress said she is still in disbelief over how intense the response became. “A, I’m allowed to voice my feelings, and B, do it in a way that’s not unkind necessarily."
"But there’s just an outsized fear and hatred and impulse to bash and to tear down. And I experienced a very small fraction of that,” she said. Seyfried also spoke about wanting her children to feel safe expressing their own opinions, as long as they are not harmful.
"I want my kids to be able to feel safe to voice their opinions as long as they’re not harmful,” she continues. “So I’m like, ‘What do I do? What do I say?’ And then all of a sudden I find myself with a bodyguard at the airport, and I’m like, ‘This is crazy.’”
Why did Amanda Seyfried face backlash over Charlie Kirk's comments?
Seyfried faced criticism after reportedly calling Kirk “hateful” in a social media post. The comment sparked widespread online backlash. Following the reaction, Seyfried defended herself on Instagram, saying, “We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity.”
She added that it is possible to be angry about misogyny while also condemning Kirk’s killing. “I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable,” she wrote. “No one should have to experience this level of violence.”
She concluded by saying, “This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?”
Kirk, who was a father of two, was assassinated on September 10, 2025. His memorial service took place 11 days later at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where nearly 100,000 people attended.
