Anthony Fauci subpoenaed by 3 GOP state AGs over alleged 'personal profit' from Covid guidance

WASHINGTON, DC: Former NIH Director Dr Anthony Fauci has been subpoenaed by the attorneys general of Florida, West Virginia and Louisiana as part of an investigation into whether he personally benefited from Covid-19 guidance issued during the pandemic.

The subpoenas seek records covering his guidance, financial opportunities, awards and communications related to the pandemic. The move comes as Fauci faces separate scrutiny from Senate Republicans, who voted to hold him in contempt after he repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment during a congressional hearing.

State AGs seek Fauci records over alleged ‘self-dealing’

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, along with West Virginia Attorney General John McCuskey and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking records related to Fauci’s grants, awards, book deals, board positions, and other professional opportunities.

“Government officials have a certain level of immunity in their official capacities, but if Fauci personally profited off of the ‘guidance’ he issued, that very well could have broken Florida law,” Uthmeier said. “The public deserves answers to about a million questions related to the pandemic, its origins, and the government’s actions in response."

The subpoena also seeks documents concerning vaccine efficacy and boosters, natural immunity, potential adverse events including myocarditis, messaging strategies and communications with vaccine manufacturers. Uthmeier cited diary entries recently released by Committee Chairman Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky) as part of the basis for the investigation.

“Fauci’s diary focused more on self-promotion than the legitimate safety concerns from the mRNA vaccines,” Uthmeier said. “While Fauci was pushing for book deals, awards, and fortune and fame, Floridians were being deceived and harmed by his misrepresentations.”

McCuskey cited Fauci’s refusal to answer questions before Congress “concerning,” saying the public should know whether officials were misled during the pandemic. “The American people deserve to know if they or their elected leaders were misled or manipulated. Both my office and I support Attorney General Uthmeier’s efforts to uncover the truth,” McCuskey added.

Subpoenas follow Senate clash and contempt vote

The state investigations come as Fauci faces renewed scrutiny on Capitol Hill over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. During a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing last week, Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right more than 100 times while Republicans questioned him about Covid-19 guidance, lockdowns, vaccine policies, pandemic origins and research funding.

The Republican-led committee subsequently voted to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress. Paul has said he plans to refer the matter to the Justice Department for potential prosecution, although the department would decide whether to pursue charges. Fauci was also granted a preemptive federal pardon by former President Joe Biden in January last year, covering potential federal offenses dating from 2014 to 2025.

However, his lawyer, David Schertler, has argued that Fauci’s repeated invocation of the Fifth Amendment was appropriate because the pardon does not shield him from potential state prosecution or possible perjury allegations arising from future testimony.
