Anti-crypto Democrat votes against bills while stashing Bitcoin, Ethereum in $1.2M portfolio
WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Rashida Tlaib’s latest financial disclosure has revealed a notable contradiction between her congressional record on cryptocurrency and her personal investments, with the Michigan Democrat reporting holdings tied to Bitcoin and Ethereum in her retirement accounts.
Tlaib has voted against major crypto legislation in Congress, including the CLARITY Act, while her disclosure lists up to $15,000 in an Ethereum-linked exchange-traded fund and another $15,000 in a Bitcoin ETF.
The investments were held through a Charles Schwab retirement account, according to the filing.
The disclosure comes as lawmakers prepare for another push on digital-asset legislation and the Trump administration backs efforts to establish a clearer regulatory framework for cryptocurrency.
Tlaib’s disclosure reveals crypto holdings
Tlaib’s financial filing lists 41 separate holdings across her retirement and investment accounts.
Among them are the Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF, valued in the 1,001-15,000 range, and an iShares Bitcoin ETF in the same range.
The filing does not provide an exact value because congressional disclosure rules require lawmakers to report assets within broad ranges.
The crypto-linked investments are held alongside other financial assets, including international funds focused on European and Asian markets, international bond funds and an investment designed to hedge exposure to the US dollar.
Tlaib also reported mortgages of up to $750,000 and a Detroit rental property valued at up to $250,000.
Her voting record raises questions
The holdings stand out because of Tlaib’s opposition to major cryptocurrency measures in Congress.
She voted against the CLARITY Act, legislation aimed at establishing a regulatory framework for digital assets. She also voted for a resolution addressing what lawmakers described as “crypto corruption.”
The disclosure does not establish that Tlaib personally traded the assets or that her investments influenced her votes. It does, however, show that her retirement portfolio has exposure to the same digital-asset sector she has opposed through her congressional votes.
Tlaib is also a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and she has continued to campaign alongside progressive candidates and activists.
Congress prepares for crypto push
The disclosure arrives as cryptocurrency legislation is again gaining momentum in Washington.
Bitcoin rose to around $71,000 this week as President Donald Trump backed Senate action on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.
The proposed framework would clarify how digital assets are regulated and which federal agencies oversee different parts of the market.
The Senate is expected to revisit the legislation when lawmakers return from recess in September.
Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Michael Selig has also said the agency is prepared to establish a regulated crypto market structure using its existing authority.
