NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: President-elect Donald Trump stated that it was "too bad" that Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez failed to win the leadership position of the House Oversight Committee over social media on Wednesday, December 18.

The liberal Congresswoman took the opportunity to take a dig at the conservative leader for feeling sorry for her, as she commented on his remark on X (formerly Twitter) on the same day, reported Huff Post.

According to the publication, AOC lost the vote to become the top-ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday by 131-84 to Rep Gerry Connolly (D-Va).

The 74-year-old Congressman refused to admit there were generational overtones to his matchup against Ocasio-Cortez, 35, saying, "I’ve never had a shot. This is my shot, irrespective of my age. I have something to contribute still, and I want to do it.”

AOC's quip to Trump's comment

After AOC lost her bid to chair the House Committee, Trump shared a message for her on Truth Social, writing, "Really too bad that AOC lost the Battle for the Leadership Seat in the Democrat Party. She should keep trying. Someday, she will be successful!”

Trump and Ocasio-Cortez are known to be on opposite ends of the political spectrum and have strongly criticized each other's policy stances in the past.

Sharing Trump's post on her X account, AOC hit back at the President-elect, stating, "Damn you know it’s bad when even Trump is feeling bad for me,” followed by a laughing emoji.

AOC previously posted about her defeat, writing, "Tried my best. Sorry I couldn’t pull it through everyone - we live to fight another day.”

Internet reacts to AOC's tweet

Conservatives on X called for AOC to reach out and work with Trump after his gesture. The following tweets demonstrate their takes.

"Trump is a good guy and always willing to work with others. When you decide to stop spreading lies, talk to him," wrote a user.

"AOC, you should ditch the dems and come over to the right side of history," shared another.

"The political establishment overlords want you to think he is someone that he’s not. Give them the finger and fight for your district," noted a third.

"That’s your queue to ditch the zeros and get with the heroes," quipped a fourth.

"Maybe, because he disagrees with you on a lot of things but recognizes you as a fellow agent of change for a corrupt government," stated a fifth.
