NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Speculation is mounting that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may launch a presidential campaign in 2028. The progressive Congresswoman has been contentious since her surprising victory over established Democrat Joe Crowley in the 2018 primary, securing a House seat at 29.

The 2028 election, with Donald Trump confirming he will not participate, opens up primaries for both parties. This election will also be the first in which Ocasio-Cortez is eligible to run, as she will meet the constitutional age requirement of 35.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparks speculation over 2028 presidential race

A recent article from The Hill indicates that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may be a potential Democratic contender for the 2028 election, alongside figures such as Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Gretchen Whitmer, JB Pritzker, Josh Shapiro, and Gavin Newsom.

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz further fueled speculation by stating, "Alex has told people she’s running in 2028 since 2019."

Although the Congresswoman has not publicly signaled her intention to run, several sources have informed the site that she would be a leading candidate.

"She's somebody who can cut through the noise and doesn't talk like Washington," one party insider remarked, as per Daily Mail.

Another person, however, expressed skepticism that the "Squad's" inclination for stirring up trouble among fellow Democrats would be effective in a primary.

The person stated, "She and the 'squad' started pushing too hard, too fast. DC doesn't work that way. And our party doesn't work that way. We need to get back to the basics."

Ocasio-Cortez has remained relatively silent following Harris' defeat, having supported Joe Biden throughout the year, despite his disastrous debate performance in June. Later, she shifted her support to Harris.

Left-wing commentators express doubts about AOC's 2028 presidential bid

Many left-wing activists and commentators on social media express doubts about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's chances of success as a potential presidential candidate, despite being the most progressive Democrat since her mentor Bernie Sanders.

"I like AOC, but would be so much better for the Left to run, say, a labor leader with the potential for a wide, 'cross-partisan' working-class appeal than an already polarizing left-wing elected from a deep blue district," Bhaskar Sunkara, the author of 'The Socialist Manifesto' stated.

Left-wing podcaster Matthew Sitman stated on X, "My honest opinion is that if AOC runs for president in 2028 she’s going to get absolutely smoked, and it’ll be interpreted as a punctuation mark on the beating back of the left Democrats have successfully undertaken after Bernie gave them a scare."

Some people are skeptical about the way Ocasio-Cortez functions within the circles of power in DC as a House member.

"AOC polls around 4% rn against other potentially Democratic primary candidates which isn’t great bc she has huge name recognition. She could change that by running an anti-establishment Bernie ‘16 style campaign but she’s likely too conciliatory to power to do that," comedian Kate Willett wrote.

Oscar-nominated writer and journalist David Sirota claimed, "AOC has the skill to be a real contender. But if she surrounds herself with the same DC lifers who ran Dem campaigns into the ground, always counsel being nice to the establishment & always have their eye on their next DC gigs, then she'll probably lose."

"Iron Law Of Democratic Politics: Someone genuinely challenging the status quo cannot "nice" their way to victory. They will never win the Dem nomination unless they rip it out of the cold dead hands of the establishment - and DC careerists will never run a campaign like that," he added.

Other X users also expressed doubts about AOC's chances of winning if she decides to run in the 2028 elections.

"AOC has two things going for her youth and celebrity but that’s it! being said She Has Absolutely No Chance of Being President Ever! She also had campaign finance issues!" said one.

Another added, "This just shows how thin the Democrat bench is. An AOC candidacy would be a total gift to Republicans, but then again so would Harris, Newsom, Whitmer or Pritzker."

"She reportedly is thinking about running, but she said she has to find a comfortable pair of running shoes first before she makes a decision," a critic mocked.

Another added, "There is no way she wins a single primary. She is quite literally the worst thing to happen to democrats. So let her run and embarrass the hell out of herself. It will be fun to watch."
