Armed man arrested outside Trump's golf club with rifle, body armor and alarming notes

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A man was arrested near President Donald Trump's Los Angeles-area golf course after authorities said he appeared to be monitoring security preparations ahead of the president's fundraiser.

The arrest, which took place on Sunday, August 2, was announced by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday after investigators uncovered weapons, ammunition, and other items during searches connected to the suspect. 

Authorities said President Trump continued with his planned Republican National Committee fundraiser at the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes, and officials did not identify any credible threat to the community. 

Suspect monitored security before Trump's visit

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele, of Downey, was seen taking photographs and recording videos around the golf course as security preparations were underway for Trump's visit.

Deputies said Taele was carrying a 16-round magazine loaded with ammunition in his pocket when they encountered him.

A subsequent search of his vehicle allegedly uncovered a loaded pistol.

The arrest came two days before President Trump was scheduled to attend a Republican National Committee dinner at the golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, just south of Los Angeles.

Authorities have not publicly explained why Taele was photographing the area, but said his actions drew the attention of law enforcement during heightened security operations surrounding the president's visit.

Authorities seize weapons from suspect's home

Investigators later expanded their search to Taele's residence in nearby Downey on Monday, August 3. 

According to authorities, the search uncovered multiple firearms, magazines, and ammunition, along with body armor and notebooks containing what the sheriff's department described as "concerning statements."

Officials did not disclose what those statements said or explain whether they believed they referenced President Trump or the upcoming fundraiser.

The department also did not state whether investigators believe Taele intended to carry out an attack. Instead, authorities limited their comments to outlining the evidence recovered during the investigation and the criminal charges that followed.

Jeanine John Taele pleads not guilty

Following his arrest, Taele was charged with several felony offenses, including second-degree robbery, receiving a large-capacity magazine, and possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun. 

He also faces a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. Taele appeared in court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to all charges.

A judge ordered him to stay away from Trump's golf course and prohibited him from possessing weapons while the case moves forward. His bail was set at $250,000.

The sheriff's department said there is "no credible threat to our communities," and President Trump continued with his scheduled fundraiser. Authorities also noted that Taele was already being investigated by the El Segundo Police Department in connection with a robbery case.

The incident comes after a jury in 2025 found a man guilty of attempting to assassinate Trump at his Florida golf club.
