Barack Obama backed for pressuring Joe Biden to reconsider reelection bid
WASHINGTON, DC: Barack Obama is reportedly pressuring President Joe Biden to reconsider his candidacy in the 2024 race, according to a recent report.
The former US president and Joe Biden have only spoken once since the latter's disastrous debate performance on June 27.
Barack Obama believes Joe Biden has less chance of winning 2024 election
Barack Obama expressed concerns about the diminished chances of Joe Biden defeating Donald Trump in November, reported the Washington Post.
The 44th president has reportedly told allies that the 81-year-old commander-in-chief should seriously reconsider whether he should continue his reelection campaign.
However, Obama thinks Biden needs to decide to drop out of the race himself.
While speaking to reporters at a counter-programming press conference in Milwaukee amid the Republican National Convention, Quentin Fulks, principal deputy campaign manager for the Biden-Harris campaign addressed the president's stance over his candidacy.
“Our campaign is not working through any scenarios where President Biden is not at the top of the ticket. He is and will be the Democratic nominee,” said Fulks.
"The president has said it several times: he’s staying in this race,” Biden's staffer continued.
“I talk to the president every single day in some form. … He is usually fact-checking me on a statistic that I got wrong," Fulks added.
Democratic Party's concerns over Joe Biden's candidacy
While Barack Obama publicly acknowledged that "bad debate nights happen,” he did not intervene when his friend, actor George Clooney, wrote a New York Times op-ed calling for Joe Biden to step aside.
Additionally, sources revealed to the Washington Post that Obama has been receiving calls from panicked Democrats on Capitol Hill, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Despite concerns within the party, the Democratic National Committee confirmed on Wednesday, July 17, that it was delaying plans for Biden's nomination via electronic vote before the party's convention set to take place from August 19 to 22.
