ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA: On September 17, 2025, former President Barack Obama addressed a crowd at the Jefferson Educational Society in Erie, condemning Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting as “horrific and a tragedy.”

During the same speech, he defended his wife Michelle Obama after Kirk’s controversial 2023 comments and stressed the importance of civil debate even amid political violence.

Charlie Kirk tragedy recognized even by critics

Obama said, “Obviously I didn’t know Charlie Kirk,” but added that he was aware of many of Kirk’s controversial ideas including Kirk’s past remarks about Black women like Michelle Obama and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and made clear that while those ideas were wrong, they did not erase the horror of his killing.

“What happened was a tragedy and I mourn for him and his family,” Obama stated. He emphasized that regardless of political divide, what occurred was beyond acceptable.

Defending Michelle Obama amid resurfaced attacks

Kirk had once claimed that Michelle Obama, Justice Jackson, and other prominent Black women did not have enough “brain processing power” - remarks Obama directly addressed, calling them offensive.

Obama argued such statements must be condemned, yet said that responding with hatred or violence only deepens division. He affirmed that challenging beliefs is necessary, but preserving respect and civility remains vital.

Obama warns political violence threatens democratic norms

Obama described the United States as at an “inflection point,” warning that turning political disagreement into violence is a threat to democracy.

He cited both Kirk’s killing and recent attacks on Minnesota lawmakers as examples. Obama criticized those who quickly assign blame, especially from the radical left or political opponents before facts are clear, saying such reactions fuel divisions.

He praised Utah Governor Spencer Cox for a response that models civility despite deep disagreement.

Social media reacts to Obama’s message of mourning and moderation

Online, Obama’s remarks drew a wave of mixed reactions, with many leaning negative.

Critics argued he was too soft on Kirk’s controversial past and accused him of using the tragedy to push a broader message. Some said his defense of Michelle Obama’s intelligence came off as a distraction rather than a response to violence.

Others, however, praised his call for grace and responsible leadership, noting that his emphasis on mourning rather than revenge was a rare show of restraint. Clips of his comments were widely shared, sparking debates over whether political discourse has become too toxic and if leaders are doing enough to lower the temperature.

One user on X commented, "Find a mirror. This lunacy started with you."

Another added, "Hey Barack, you haven't got a sincere compassionate bone in your pitiful body. Charlie was a far better human than you."

One person wrote, "Please. We all know what motivated Charlie Kirk's MURDER. Apparently you will never learn."

Someone else said, "I know what motivated his death. It's the hateful vitriolic rhetoric that your party and MSM propaganda arm spews daily. Stop pretending that radical left wing democrat messaging isn't responsible for this. Because it is."

Another reaction read, "Democrat violence needs to end."

As another pointed out, "You liberals motivated the person."

Another added, "We know what motivated the shooter, same as all the others. Its left wing rhetoric."

Someone else said, "What motivated them is you and your Democrat party."
