‘You are 82, sir’: Internet mocks Bernie Sanders after he announces his re-election decision
WASHINGTON, DC: Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has announced his run for a fourth term in the Senate.
If elected, this would make him 83 years old and add to his record as the longest-serving independent in congressional history.
Bernie Sanders explains why he is seeking another term
Sanders, a key figure of the progressive left, has had two presidential runs as a Democratic candidate in 2016 and 2020.
He served 16 years in the House of Representatives before being elected to his first six-year term in the Senate in 2006. He was reelected in 2012 and 2018.
Although he was one of the few independents in the Senate, Sanders has largely caucused with Democrats throughout his career.
He chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and is part of other committees. His seniority places him among Senate Democratic leadership.
His tenure in Congress is the longest of any independent in American history.
"Let me thank the people of Vermont, from the bottom of my heart, for giving me the opportunity to serve them in the United States Senate. It has been the honor of my life," Sanders wrote in a caption of a video on X as he sought a new term.
"Today, I am announcing my intention to seek another term," he wrote and then went on to explain why he decided to contest the election in the eight-minute-long video.

“I have been, and will be if re-elected, in a strong position to provide the kind of help that Vermonters need in these difficult times, Sanders said, according to Newsweek.
He also noted the importance of the upcoming November election saying, "This is the most important national election in our lifetimes."
“We must fight to make sure that we remain a democracy, not an authoritarian society," he said. “The stakes are enormous,” he added, further noting that “This is an election we must not lose.”
Internet reaction to Bernie Sanders' re-election bid
Upon his announcement, some online users expressed concern about Sanders’ age. If re-elected, he would be 83 years old at the start of his term and 89 years old at its completion.
One user wrote, “You are 82, sir. Stand down and allow somebody much, MUCH younger to serve.”
Others echoed this sentiment, calling for a new generation of leadership and term limits as as per one X user, "Boomers are so last century. With respect, sir."
Some other comments included, “Man we need term limits,” “Time to go home Bernie,” and “Jesus Christ dude. Hang it up already."
"You do this country a disservice by not allowing a new generation to lead. Time to retire Bernie…” wrote another.
However, there were also voices of support. One user wrote, “Thank you Senator Sanders for running again! We still need you."
"Not just for the people of Vermont but also for the planet and poor and working class across the country. You are a treasured ally and fighter in federal government for the well-being of all,” wrote another.
One more wrote, "Bernie, your 'thank you' note to Vermont just might become the longest in history!." "All the best Bernie," wrote another while a user added, "Good decision."
