WASHINGTON, DC: Sen Bernie Sanders expressed his continued support for Joe Biden in his reelection bid even after the President's "terrible" performance in the debate against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, during the Sunday, July 7, episode of 'Face the Nation.'

The 82-year-old veteran politician from Vermont, who is a year older than the incumbent, acknowledged Biden's advanced age and urged voters to look beyond it to his policies.

There have been increasing concerns across the aisle over Biden's mental acuity to continue in the top office of the United States, especially after he lost his train of thought and had trouble finishing his sentences multiple times on stage during the June 27 presidential debate.

When asked if Biden still enjoyed his support, Sanders pointed out that he had already done six events in Wisconsin, New York, and Ohio to campaign for the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Bernie Sander backs Joe Biden, says his policies will benefit people

"What we are talking about right now is not a Grammy Award contest for best singer. Biden is old. He's not as articulate as he once was. I wish he could jump up the steps on Air Force One. He can't," Sanders told CBS News host Robert Costa on Sunday.

"What we have got to focus on is policy, whose policies have and will benefit the vast majority of the people in this country."

The senator, who is himself up for reelection from Vermont, stated that he believes the American people want a president with the "guts to take on corporate America," someone who will expand Medicare, raise and extend the life of Social Security benefits, and open conversations about a "permanent child tax credit to cut childhood poverty in America by 50%".

"The American people want an agenda for the next four years that speaks to the needs of the working class of this country," expressed Sanders, noting that 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and that 25% of "elderly people" are trying to live off $15,000 a year or less.

"He (Biden) has got to say, ‘I am prepared to take on corporate greed, massive income and wealth inequality and stand with the working class in this country.’ He does that, he's going to win and win big," he added.

Internet reacts to Bernie Sanders' comments

Netizens do not share Sanders' faith in Biden's policies, as the following tweets in response to his statement demonstrate.

"We’ve seen what he’s done so far. Hard pass," wrote a user.

"They don’t stand with the working class and will lose but you support them anyway. Pathetic," expressed another.

"Dude doing this whole life wants us to support dude doing this whole life for what they will do in the future. Nice. Politics is weird," mocked a third.

"Democrats haven’t supported the working class in decades," slammed a fourth user.

"He's a zombie he can't even walk let alone accomplish what you just said," noted a fifth of Biden.
