WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump's lawyers requested a halt in the classified documents case against him on Friday, July 5, claiming that a recent Supreme Court ruling "guts" prosecutors' arguments that the former president has "no immunity" from criminal responsibility for withholding national security papers, as per the New York Post.

Attorneys Todd Blanche, Emil Bove, and Christopher Kise stated in court filings that Special Counsel Jack Smith can no longer use evidence that included "official acts," following the Supreme Court's July 1 ruling, which grants presidents absolute immunity from prosecution for any such actions taken while in office.

They also highlighted Justice Clarence Thomas' concurring opinion in the 6-3 decision, which raised questions about Smith's appointment as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Donald Trump's attorneys accuse Joe Biden of misusing the criminal justice system while requesting a stay in classified docs case

President Joe Biden criticized the Supreme Court ruling, arguing that voters "deserve" to know about the outcome of former President Trump's federal case involving the January 6 Capitol Hill insurrection before Election Day, which seems highly unlikely as of now.

The 81-year-old incumbent came out swinging in his most direct remarks about the Trump indictments so far, saying, "The man who sent that mob to the US Capitol is facing a potential criminal conviction for what happened that day and the American people deserve to have an answer in the courts before the upcoming election."

Blanche, Bove, and Kise interpreted the comment as further evidence of an "ongoing lawfare campaign" against the 78-year-old MAGA strongman, linking Special Counsel Smith's charges to Biden's reelection bid.

They argued, "The remark explicitly connected the Special Counsel’s Office with President Biden’s misuse of the criminal justice system to communicate with voters prior to the election."

Following Biden's poor debate performance on June 27 against Trump, the attorneys suggested that there were "leaks" to the Washington Post about Smith’s intention to continue the prosecution even if Trump emerges victorious in the November election.

"Smith’s indirect notification to the media and his allies that he has no qualms about prosecuting President Trump, even as President-elect after more than 100 million Americans cast their votes, is in blatant violation of DOJ policy and practice," claimed the Trump lawyers.

In response to the situation, the ex-president’s defense team requested a partial stay from Judge Aileen Cannon to address "threshold questions" about the immunity ruling and its implications, which could delay a potential trial deadline even further.

The proposed schedule for handling the immunity-related briefings would extend into September.

Blanche, Bove, and Kise concluded by writing, "The Court should resolve the threshold questions identified in Trump relating to Presidential immunity and the Appointments Clause, as well as the related issues presented in the Appropriations Clause motion, prior to addressing the other numerous problems with this case."

Special Counsel Smith’s office has opposed the stay motion and requested the opportunity to respond to it in a statement included in the filing.

The immunity ruling could also affect the 2024 presumptive GOP nominee's hush money conviction, but legal experts told The Post that it’s unlikely despite his sentencing being pushed back to September.

Internet slams Donald Trump as his attorneys request a stay on classified documents case

Netizens were quick to criticize Trump as his attorneys filed a stay motion in his Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, citing SCOTUS' recent immunity ruling.

One remarked, "Nope he’s a traitor! He sold our secrets," and another said, "Can't help but feel like there's always some new twist in these cases."

"When does E Jean Carrol get her money?" asked a person, referring to the $83.3 million verdict in E Jean Carroll's defamation lawsuit.

An individual slammed the SCOTUS ruling, writing, "After this wrong-headed decision, can we even impeach a President anymore?"

"He wasn't president* when he refused to return the stuff, hid it and lied and ignored subpoenas. That is just stupid, however his defense team(Aileen Canon) is sandbagging the case," pointed out another person.

One more inquired, "Why would he not want to go to trial to prove his innocence? Why hasn't anyone in the media asked this? Not one member of the media has the guts to ever confront or challenge Trump. You are all spineless and do not deserve the title of reporters."
