PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: Former President Donald Trump's trip to Mar-a-Lago in July 2022 was investigated by special counsel Jack Smith.

This trip occurred just before the FBI executed a search warrant to retrieve highly classified government documents that were allegedly hidden there, per RawStory.

According to ABC News, prosecutors were suspicious of the timing of the trip, as it coincided with a subpoena issued in June 2022 for Mar-a-Lago surveillance footage.

Later, this footage served as evidence indicating that the MAGA strongman had tried to unlawfully obstruct government efforts to recover the top-secret documents.

Moreover, the trip to Mar-a-Lago raised concerns because it took place during a time when the club was undergoing substantial renovations.

What else did prosecutors allege regarding Trump’s July 2022 visit to Mar-a-Lago before the FBI search?

ABC News reported, "At least one witness who worked closely with the former president recalled being told at the time of the trip that Trump was there 'checking on the boxes,'" although others who were present stated that former President Trump visited the resort to inspect the progress of its renovations.

Messages obtained by the Special Counsel's team indicate that Trump's aides were determined to keep the visit "secret" for reasons that were not explained.

"On July 8, when one Trump Organization employee reached out to indicted co-conspirator Walt Nauta wanting to confirm rumors of a Trump visit so proper preparations could be made, Nauta made clear he wanted the trip to remain 'discreet,'" the aforementioned outlet stated. "The sources said Nauta sent a text message to the employee that included emojis with zippers over the mouth, which is often used to convey a secret."

Last year, Special Counsel Jack Smith charged former President Donald Trump with unlawfully retaining classified documents, which included intelligence reports concerning a foreign nation's nuclear weapons program, and with attempting to hinder government efforts to retrieve the classified documents.
