WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump's legal team was in a Florida courtroom on Monday, June 25, battling special counsel Jack Smith over the classified documents case, according to Raw Story.

Emil Bove, a Trump attorney, asserted, among other things, that Smith had no genuine jurisdiction over the matter since Congress had not approved him. The case of Richard Nixon and Robert Mueller's hiring in the Russia investigation both had similar arguments.

Notably, the issue that Florida Judge Aileen Cannon is debating concerns the Department of Justice's financing for the special counsel's office.

Just Security fellow Adam Klasfeld wrote after the morning session, "Trump’s overarching effort to declare Smith unconstitutionally appointed remains a longshot. But Cannon made a blockbuster remark on Monday suggesting that the 'limitless' funding of the special counsel’s office implicates serious separation of powers concerns for her."

Trump's team is trying to amend the regulations controlling the special counsel, according to MSNBC's Katie Phang, who summarized the morning arguments.

Moreover, Bove criticized the Justice Department's defense of the special counsel's funding, stating that Congress ought to take "political action" if funds were still being used by the DOJ to support the prosecution of the Republican presidential nominee.

Phang posted on X, "Bove: We need more oversight from Congress for the extraordinary and unprecedented things going on here. More is required here given what is at stake. The DOJ's position is disrespectful and unacceptable."

Furthermore, the proposal for a gag order that was scheduled for discussion on Monday afternoon was subsequently opposed by Bove.

The special counsel requested a gag order, according to Trump's team, since the first presidential debate is set for this Thursday, June 27. They also sought to know if Attorney General Merrick Garland had approved the filing of the motion.

Notably, Cannon will hear arguments in the lawsuit involving the classified documents for three days.

Internet reacts as Donald Trump's lawyers demand congressional Republicans oversee Jack Smith

Several social media users ridiculed Trump and his lawyers as they demanded that congressional Republicans oversee Jack Smith.

A user said, "So Trump and the GOP want to rig the justice system and weaponize it so that it protects Trump? How ironic."

Another said, "They are dismantling our democracy piece by piece."

A person wrote, "Trump and his lawyers are in no position to demand anything from Congress, HE IS NOT THE PRESIDENT."

A user said mockingly, "Yeah, sure, if these cons would say the same if it was a Democrat, Hades would freeze over."

A user also stated, "Cannon and Trump both act as if he is guilty...and his only chance is to delay in hopes he gets elected...then have Trump illegally shut down the trial."

Another remarked, "Stupid client, stupid lawyers. What else can go wrong with this combination."
