NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Senator Bernie Sanders warned President Joe Biden of the moral and political weak spot that he was putting himself in with his support of Israel throughout its war on Gaza, during an interview with CNN on May 2.

The progressive Democrat from Vermont also expressed solidarity with pro-Palestine student protesters holding demonstrations against Israel on the campuses of various colleges across the United States.

Bernie Sanders says Joe Biden has 'alienated young people'

"This may be Biden's Vietnam," said the Senator of the mass student protests against the US backing of Israel.

"Lyndon Johnson in many respects was a very, very good president domestically and brought forth some major pieces of legislation. He chose not to run in 1968 because of opposition to his views on Vietnam," he continued.

"I worry very much that President Biden is putting himself in a position where he has alienated not just young people, but a lot of the Democratic base in terms of his views on Israel and this war."

With the 2024 presidential election fast approaching, Biden has to attempt to bring together the pro and anti-Israel factions in the Democratic Party. According to Fox News, approval for the US support of Israel in the war has dropped across the aisle. While it went down from 71 per cent in November 2023 to 64 per cent in March among Republicans, in the case of Democrats, the support plummeted to 18 per cent.

Bernie Sanders says Benjamin Netanyahu's government a 'disaster'

The Senator slammed the leadership of the Israeli Prime Minister in the conflict, stating, "I happen to believe, not everyone agrees with me, that the war policies of the Netanyahu government are a disaster. They are causing unprecedented harm. They are in violation of international and absolutely in violation of American law by the law."

Sanders went on to state that the support Netanyahu enjoyed from the POTUS has cost the incumbent back at home, saying, "So I would hope very much that from certainly a policy point of view, from a moral point of view, that the president stops giving a blank check to Netanyahu. I would hope that they understand that from a political point of view, this has not been helpful. Quite the contrary."

Internet says Bernie Sanders 'backstabbing' his pal Joe Biden

The internet was divided in its response to Sanders' comments.

"Bernie's got a point, foreign policy is tricky and can make or break a presidency. Biden's gotta play his cards right or he could end up in a political quagmire," wrote a user.

"That underscores the problem with most politicians. Values are discarded in favor of votes," stated another.

"Well said Comrade," commented a third.

"Backstabbing your friend Bernie?" jibed a fourth user.

"Bernie's got a point. Unpopular foreign policy moves can really drag down a presidency. Just look at history," noted a fifth.
