Biden slammed as GOP Sen candidate Sam Brown accuses him and opponent Jacky Rosen of rising inflation
WASHINGTON, DC: Nationwide polling suggests that heightened inflation and the state of the US economy rank alongside the border crisis and immigration policies as the foremost concerns for voters ahead of the November elections.
In March 2024, The Center Square Voters Voice Poll surveyed over 2,500 likely voters, revealing that inflation and price increases (cited by 45% as a top-three concern), illegal immigration (44%), and the economy and jobs (24%) were the predominant issues on voters' minds.
The US Senate candidates from Nevada, Democratic incumbent Senator Jacky Rosen and her Republican challenger Sam Brown, hold different perspectives on economic improvement and cost reduction.
Jacky Rosen is advocating for additional regulations on businesses to reduce grocery costs
Rosen aims to reduce the cost of groceries and other essentials for middle-class families by implementing additional regulations on businesses, New York Post reported.
Her campaign website states that she "supports cutting taxes to the middle class" and that she wants to “prevent grocery prices from increasing further.”
In her letter to President Joe Biden, Rosen articulated her concerns regarding grocery store monopolies and the potential price pressures they could create.
“With market consolidation and decreased competition, corporations are able to engage in price manipulation like ‘shrinkflation’; charging families more for less. I’ve raised significant concerns about the impact such mergers could have on grocery costs in Nevada, including urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to block the Kroger-Albertsons grocery store mega merger because it could lead to higher prices.”
Rosen also backed the $437 billion Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which led to the creation of tens of thousands of new jobs through a significant taxpayer-funded investment in clean energy. Rosen's campaign did not reply to The Center Square's request for a comment.
Sam Brown criticized federal government for excessive spending and poor resource allocation
Meanwhile, Brown has linked inflation to excessive government expenditure. During a primary debate in May 2022, he advocated for the abolition of the Departments of Energy, Transportation, and Education.
He stated that these eliminations would form part of a broader plan to remove "duplicate" agencies at both state and federal levels.
In a statement to The Center Square, Brown's campaign stated, “Taxpayers know the federal government has a terrible track record of exorbitant spending and poorly allocating resources."
It further read, "It’s why, through the failed leadership of Jacky Rosen and Joe Biden, the country is $34 trillion in debt and the cost of living is at an all-time high. As a small business owner, I look at all budgets with an eye toward cost savings and raising revenue."
"Nevada deserves a leader who takes every opportunity to give the taxpayer relief where it is prudent and stands up to bloated bureaucracy. An easy place to start is trimming the excessive waste within federal departments,” it concluded.
Sam Brown advocates for Federal Reserve interest rate increases to combat high inflation
During a debate in May 2022, Brown advocated for the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates by "2.5 points or more" as a measure against high inflation, which had reached 8.6% that month.
Between March 2022 and July 2023, the Federal Funds rate increased by five points. By June 2024, the inflation rate had decreased to 3.3%, approaching the Federal Reserve's target inflation rate of 2%.
In a discussion with The Washington Examiner, Brown stated that reducing taxes would benefit the overall economy.
“I subscribe to the sort of tax and economics philosophy that raising taxes, while it does in theory and in practice sometimes produce more revenue, the best way to increase revenue for the government is actually by lowering taxes, lowering regulations, allowing the economy to boom,” Brown added.
Internet slams Jacky Rosen over inflation
As soon as New York Post published the news on social media, users started reacting to it. A reader remarked talking about Rosen, "I live in Las Vegas and she'll say anything to stay in office."
Another user added, "Jackie Rosen feeling the heat. She voted lockstep with Biden and helped drive inflation to where is............."
The third commentator questioned, "Got any new material or is this the extent of your education?"
"They have no idea what they are saying...fed to them to repeat!" One said.
A person stated, "Deserting a losing general is what cowards do."
