WASHINGTON, DC: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates found himself under intense congressional scrutiny on Wednesday, June 10, as lawmakers pressed him over his relationship with convicted offender Jeffrey Epstein, a connection Gates has repeatedly described as one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

The closed-door House Oversight Committee interview marks one of the panel’s most prominent sessions in its broader examination of the government's handling of investigations linked to Epstein and his associates.

Gates arrived at the hearing pledging cooperation, telling reporters he hoped his testimony would assist efforts to secure justice for victims.

For years, Gates has denied witnessing or participating in any criminal conduct involving Epstein.

Yet his association with the disgraced financier has remained a persistent source of controversy, affecting both his public image and the reputation of the philanthropic empire he helped build.

Lawmakers revisit years of contact

Committee Chairman James Comer first approached Gates in March, arguing the billionaire may possess information relevant to the committee’s ongoing inquiry.

The hearing comes after a series of recent interviews with key figures connected to the broader Epstein investigation, including former Attorney General Pam Bondi, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Epstein's longtime executive secretary, Lesley Groff.

Fresh attention on Gates intensified earlier this year following the release of additional Epstein-related documents by the Department of Justice.

The files included correspondence between the two men and references to personal matters that reignited public debate about the nature of their relationship.

Gates has acknowledged that he spent time with Epstein despite being aware of his prior criminal history. In previous interviews, he admitted he regretted not examining Epstein’s background more closely before engaging with him.

'I should never have met him'

Gates used his opening remarks to deliver his clearest acknowledgment yet of the relationship, telling lawmakers that meeting Epstein was a profound mistake that should never have happened.

"I should never have met with Epstein in the first place," Gates told the committee, adding that no amount of philanthropic fundraising or access to wealthy donors would have justified the association.

He acknowledged that he was aware Epstein had previously faced legal issues but admitted he failed to apply the scrutiny such a relationship warranted.

The Microsoft co-founder reiterated that he never witnessed criminal conduct, never visited Epstein's private island, ranch, or Florida residence, and never participated in any illegal activity.

Gates said that while Epstein attempted to cultivate a personal relationship, he was never interested in doing so and ultimately severed contact altogether by the end of 2014.

Emails and philanthropy draw scrutiny

Investigators are also expected to focus heavily on communications between Gates and Epstein regarding charitable initiatives and fundraising efforts.

Documents released by the Department of Justice indicate the pair remained in contact for several years after first meeting in 2011.

Their exchanges included discussions about donor-advised funds and strategies for attracting wealthy contributors to global health projects.

Gates has consistently maintained that his interest in Epstein stemmed from the financier’s claims that he could connect major donors to philanthropic causes.

He later concluded that those efforts led nowhere.

The Gates Foundation has stated that no partnership was ultimately formed and that no foundation money was transferred to Epstein or any fund connected to him.

Personal secrets become pressure point

Lawmakers are also expected to scrutinize Gates' claim that Epstein attempted to exploit sensitive details about his private life after their relationship deteriorated.

According to his prepared testimony, Gates told investigators that Epstein became aware of his extramarital affairs and later used that information, along with what Gates described as false allegations, in an effort to pressure him into re-establishing contact.

Gates maintained that the effort ultimately failed but argued it illustrated how Epstein sought to leverage relationships with influential individuals to advance his own interests.

The issue resurfaced earlier this year after newly released Epstein files included draft emails containing unverified allegations about Gates' personal life.

Gates has strongly denied the claims, calling them false and absurd, while insisting that Epstein's actions reflected frustration over their ended relationship.

"I should never have met with Epstein in the first place," Gates told lawmakers, describing the association as a grave error in judgment that continues to carry personal consequences.

Personal fallout remains unresolved

The renewed scrutiny extends beyond philanthropy and into the personal consequences of Gates’ association with Epstein.

Earlier this year, Gates reportedly addressed foundation staff about personal relationships that Epstein later became aware of.

Representatives for Gates have said Epstein unsuccessfully attempted to use knowledge of a past relationship to pressure him.

Melinda French Gates has also publicly reflected on the issue, describing the release of Epstein-related records as a painful reminder of difficult periods in their marriage.

She has repeatedly argued that questions surrounding the relationship should be answered by those directly involved.

As lawmakers continue examining whether Epstein used his network to gain influence over powerful individuals, Gates' testimony is expected to provide one of the most closely watched accounts yet from a figure who moved within Epstein's orbit long after his criminal conviction became public.
