Bryon Noem’s neighbors blame Kristi Noem for intense scrutiny, say he ‘never asked for public life’
WATERTOWN, SOUTH DAKOTA: Neighbors of Bryon Noem have rallied around the small-town insurance agent after reports surfaced about his alleged activity on online forums, sparking widespread attention.
The controversy emerged after the Daily Mail published photos on March 31, prompting a response from his wife, former South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, who said she was “devastated” and “blindsided,” according to the New York Post.
Residents in the community, however, have largely expressed sympathy for Bryon Noem, describing him as a private individual caught in an unexpected public spotlight.
Community backs Bryon Noem
The Daily Mail reported that photos showed Bryon Noem posing in pink hot pants and wearing large fake breasts, allegedly made of balloons, bringing scrutiny to his personal life.
Several residents from Watertown and Castlewood told The New York Times they viewed him as a “good man” and were sympathetic to his situation. Former Democratic state senator Nancy Turbak said, “He ‘never asked for the public life in the first place.’”
“I am sorry that Bryon is now the subject of so much attention himself, and for any embarrassment he’s experiencing,” Turbak added. “I know him to be a kind and decent man. I wish he were not going through this.”

Meanwhile, Donald Trump told the Daily Mail he felt “badly for the family” and said, “That's too bad, but I just know nothing about it.”
Some locals questioned the authenticity of the images. Rancher Kevin Ruesnik told The New York Times he believed the photos may have been generated using artificial intelligence.
“I grew up playing ball with Bryon,” Ruesnik said. “I’ve never known him to be part of stuff like that. I don’t believe that at all.”
Bryon Noem did not deny participation in online forums or taking the photos but rejected claims that he discussed his wife’s alleged affair with online models, according to the Daily Mail.
Report shifts media focus
The controversy emerged as speculation grew around Kristi Noem’s alleged relationship with longtime Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski, which both have previously denied.
New York Times reporter Shawn McCreesh, who was in South Dakota reporting on the allegations, said the Daily Mail story shifted the focus of his reporting. When contacted, Bryon Noem replied, “I will at some point. Today is not the day. I appreciate your heart.”
Kristi Noem had dismissed the affair claims as “tabloid garbage” during a March congressional hearing.
Despite the controversy, locals described Bryon Noem as a supportive husband who maintained a stable home life while his wife’s political profile grew. The couple, high school sweethearts engaged in 1991, have three adult children and are now grandparents.
