WASHINGTON, DC: CBS anchor Margaret Brennan grilled Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick over the list of nations on which President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs during his appearance on the Sunday, April 6, episode of 'Face the Nation,' reported Mediaite.

The POTUS announced his massive tariff plan on approximately 90 nations across the world on Wednesday, April 2, which he dubbed "Liberation Day". The development left the stock market reeling, with more than $6 trillion evaporating from the market since.

At the time, Trump stated that the tariffs were "reciprocal. That means they do it to us, and we do it to them." However, the claim was soon disputed, as the list featured Heard Island and McDonald Islands, which form an external territory of Australia near Antarctica and are famously uninhabited, home to only penguins and seals.

Pointing out the inclusion of penguin-inhabited islands on Donald Trump's tariff list, Margaret Brennan inquired about the reason behind the sweeping tariffs announced by the Trump administration, to which Howard Lutnick replied that they were simply covering all bases for "national security".

"When we saw the president stand in the Rose Garden holding up that chart that you helped make, that – that wasn’t actually tariffs," Brennan pressed her guest at one point. "That was actually confusing to investors because it was some kind of other formula, and the countries themselves seemed kind of random," she added.

“Like, why are the Heard and McDonald Islands, which don’t export to the United States and are quite literally inhabited by penguins, why do they face a 10% tariff? Did you use AI to generate this?” she asked.

Lutnick replied with a laugh that it was apparently done to stop non-allied countries such as China from exploiting any loophole.

"If you leave anything off the list, countries that try to arbitrage America go through those countries to us,” he said, to which Brennan incredulously remarked, "Through the Heard Islands?”

Lutnick said Trump placed tariffs on China in 2018 and in response, "China started going through other countries to America".

"And so the president knows that. He's tired of it, and he's going to fix that," said Lutnick.

"Basically, he said 'look I can't let any part of the world be a place where China or other countries can ship through them'," he added.

"So he ended those loopholes, these ridiculous loopholes," Lutnick said.
