Child tried to escape through rooftop in Shreveport shooting that killed 8 children
SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA: As investigators identified a father as the suspect in the Shreveport mass shooting that killed eight children, details of a child’s attempted escape emerged, leaving many shocked and disturbed.
Shamar Elkins, 31, an army veteran, allegedly shot and killed eight children, including seven of his own, in a mass shooting involving three properties in the neighbourhood.

He was identified as Shamar Elkins, he's 31.

Body of one child found on rooftop
Uncovering the new details of the crime, the police revealed that one child was found shot dead on the rooftop after his desperate attempt to escape the crime scene failed.
According to the Shreveport Police Department's Corporal Chris Bordelo, seven children were killed inside the home, while one body was found on the rooftop, signalling that the child failed his attempt to flee the crime scene or escape death.
On the other hand, State Rep Tammy Phelps, at a news conference, said some children tried to get away through the back door. “I can't even imagine what the police officers, first responders actually dealt with when they got here today,” Phelps shared.
Details about Shreveport mass shooting
The horrific crime which occurred at 6 am Central time on Sunday, April 19, is believed to be one of the US’ deadliest mass shootings since 2024.
The police spokesperson read out the ages of the victims, who were aged between one and 12 years, leaving people deeply unsettled and shaken.
Shreveport Police Department Corporal Chris Bordelon stated that the large crime scene included three locations in the Cedar Grove area.
The authorities also informed that two women have sustained injuries during the crime, and they were in critical condition.
Patrol officers were able to chase Elkins down as he carried out a carjacking after fleeing the crime scene. He was shot and killed by the police.

Investigators are yet to find out what led to the father killing his own children.
While Bordelon said there was still much to investigate, detectives believe that the matter was entirely domestic.
House Speaker Mike Johnson expresses grief, shock
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is from Shreveport, said in separate statements that they were heartbroken and praised law enforcement for their response.
“We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” Johnson said in a statement.
