NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Christa Pike is alive but critically ill after Tennessee’s attempt to execute her went wrong, with her lawyers revealing new details about the extraordinary ordeal inside the death chamber.
The 50-year-old reportedly helped execution staff locate a vein while multiple attempts were made to establish an intravenous line.
Her legal team, on Thursday, October 1, said Pike remained cooperative throughout the process before being taken for emergency medical treatment after the execution failed.

Christa Pike helped staff locate a vein
Pike’s attorneys provided a detailed account of the execution attempt during a news conference, describing repeated difficulties in establishing an intravenous line.
Attorney Randy Spivey said at least seven needles were used in Pike’s left arm during roughly an hour of attempts.
According to the defence team, at least one needle appeared bent when it was eventually removed.
Rather than resisting the process, Pike reportedly tried to assist the execution staff and repeatedly suggested places where staff could try to find a usable vein.
Her lawyers said she even asked them to try higher on her shoulder when earlier attempts were unsuccessful.
Spivey said Pike remained calm and cooperative throughout the ordeal.
She reportedly thanked staff when they believed they had successfully established an intravenous line through which the lethal-injection medication could be administered.
Pike was eventually given pentobarbital, the substance Tennessee uses in its current lethal-injection protocol. But the procedure did not produce the intended result.
According to her lawyers, Pike’s arm became discoloured during the later stages of the process, with blistering and burning reported around injection sites.
Ferrell said medical experts advising the defence believed the intravenous line may have infiltrated, meaning the medication could have entered surrounding tissue instead of reaching the bloodstream as intended.

Lawyers demand sentence commutation
Spivey said Pike remains alive and critically ill in a medical facility.
Another attorney told TMZ that Pike was unconscious but, according to his understanding, was not in a coma.
Her lawyers are now asking Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment terming it as cruel.
The failed execution followed an extraordinary legal battle.
Pike was scheduled to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on September 30.
A federal appeals court temporarily halted the proceeding shortly before the scheduled time, but the US Supreme Court later allowed Tennessee to proceed.
The execution eventually began that evening.
Witnesses reported hearing Pike complain about pain as the procedure unfolded. After the state administered its planned doses of pentobarbital, Pike was still alive.
The failure is particularly notable because Tennessee had already faced another execution problem in May.
Pike has been on death row for more than 30 years over the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at a Job Corps programme in Knoxville.
