ATLANTA, GEORGIA: A tense exchange unfolded on CNN on Sunday, March 22, as anchor Dana Bash repeatedly challenged House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries over his party’s strategy amid the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding standoff.

What began as a policy discussion quickly turned into a pointed back-and-forth, with Bash zeroing in on what she suggested were inconsistencies in the Democrats’ approach.

Bash’s line of questioning centered on a key contradiction: if Democrats were willing to fund certain parts of DHS, particularly Transportation Security Administration (TSA), what leverage remained to push for changes to immigration enforcement?

She laid it out bluntly: “Let me ask you about that because you are the whole reason that DHS is not funded right now and now what you're saying is that you're OK with funding TSA, So what was the point of the shutdown if you're OK with funding TSA?”

Rather than directly embracing the idea of political leverage, Jeffries attempted to reframe the issue.

“Well, we never approach these things in the context of leverage. Our approach is, what is the appropriate use of taxpayer dollars?” he responded, arguing that funding decisions should prioritize affordability and public welfare rather than enforcement actions he criticized.

Hakeem Jefferies cornered on Democrats' strategy on DHS, ICE

Unsatisfied, Bash circled back, sharpening her question and pressing for a clearer explanation of the strategy.

“I’m just trying to understand how if you fund TSA,' how you think that you will be able to put pressure then on the administration to make the changes to ICE that you're asking for?” she asked.

Jeffries maintained that public opinion, not congressional tactics would ultimately drive change.

“The American people are going to continue to put pressure on the administration because they know ICE is out of control,” he said, adding that Democrats believe the agency “should not get another dime of taxpayer dollars” without “bold and dramatic and meaningful changes.”

He went further, outlining specific demands, including stricter legal safeguards: ICE, he argued, must operate with “judicial warrants before ICE agents can rip the American people out of their homes in the middle of the night.”

While Jeffries emphasized principles and public pressure, his answers did not concretely address inconsistencies Bash’s repeated questioning highlighted.

The key question of what concrete mechanism remains to force policy concessions without holding back key funding, remained unanswered.
