WASHINGTON, DC: Tensions over decorum inside the House chamber spilled into a pointed exchange when CNN anchor Dana Bash challenged former Speaker Nancy Pelosi about Rep Ilhan Omar’s reaction during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

The moment came after Democrats had publicly urged members to maintain discipline and avoid disruptions during the speech - guidance that became a flashpoint once interruptions from the chamber drew attention.

During the interview, Bash pointedly reminded Pelosi that Democratic leadership had warned members against outbursts.

“People are also watching for the reaction of the opposition party and your leadership warned the caucus not to have any outbursts, not to take the bait,” Bash said.

She continued, noting the incidents were not isolated.

“There was a moment where a couple of members did not…more than one member, more than one moment,” Bash added before introducing a video of the exchange. “But I want to play one of them for you. When a couple did not heed that, just watch.”

Nancy Pelosi downplays the chamber disruption

After viewing the clip, Pelosi moved quickly to minimize the significance of the moment.

“That was hardly noticeable in the room,” she said. “It may have been more noticeable on TV. Hardly noticeable.”

Pelosi suggested that other reactions in the chamber were more pronounced, adding, “And then also when he started talking about corruption, the members were saying, what about you? What about you? What about you?”

“That was another, more of an outburst than that, actually,” she continued.

Despite the viral attention, Pelosi maintained that Democrats largely followed leadership guidance.

“I don’t think that there was that much shall we say, departure from what the leader had guided us to do,” she said.

Ilhan Omar’s exchange with Trump drew sharp reactions

The scrutiny comes after a tense stretch during the address when some Democrats broke from their initial strategy of silent protest.

For much of the first hour, Democratic lawmakers remained visibly restrained. But the mood shifted when Trump criticized immigrants and Minnesota’s Somali community.

Omar and Rep Rashida Tlaib repeatedly shouted objections from the chamber, challenging the president’s remarks.

At one point, after Trump said Democrats “should be ashamed” for not applauding his immigration comments, Omar fired back.

“You have killed Americans,” she shouted multiple times, later adding, “You should be ashamed.”

Trump responded by accusing Democrats of cheating in elections, saying without evidence that “they want to cheat.”

“They have cheated, and their policy is so bad that the only way they can get elected is to cheat,” he said, prompting further jeers.
