Terrifying video captures Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami airport, killing five

Video showed the aircraft crash and erupt in flames, while images revealed its nose on the ground and tail tilted upward

MIAMI, FLORIDA: A terrifying video captured the moment an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane crashed while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, September 6, killing at least five people and injuring five others.

The Boeing 767-300 freighter, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, overran a runway shortly before 2 pm EDT, striking multiple vehicles on the ground before catching fire.

Thick black smoke could be seen rising over the airport as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

Amazon cargo plane crash caught on video

Footage from the crash shows the aircraft coming down at the airport before the incident sent smoke and flames into the air.

Images taken afterward showed the plane’s nose on the ground and its tail tilted upward, with scorch marks visible along its right side.

Several people were trapped inside vehicles struck by the aircraft and had to be rescued, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Raied 'Ray' Jadallah. The pilot and co-pilot were also trapped inside the plane following the crash.

Officials had not identified the five people who died.

Five injured in Amazon plane crash

Five other people were injured, with three suffering critical injuries and being taken to a trauma center. Two others were transported to a local hospital.

More than 60 rescue units and about 200 personnel responded to the crash, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.

Crews were still dealing with an active fuel leak from the aircraft later Sunday afternoon.

The airport initially halted all flights following the crash, although two of its four runways had reopened by Sunday evening.

What happened to Amazon cargo plane?

The aircraft had departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was a 32-year-old Boeing 767-300 freighter.

According to Flightradar24, the plane had previously operated as a passenger aircraft for several airlines between 1994 and 2015.

The aircraft was operated for Amazon by cargo airline 21 Air. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company was working with authorities to determine what happened.

“We can confirm that an Amazon Air plane operated by 21 Air experienced an incident while attempting to land at Miami International Airport today,” Nantel said. “This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering details.”

She added that the company’s priority was supporting those affected by the crash.

21 Air also expressed condolences to the families of those killed, saying it was “devastated by the accident involving one of our aircraft in Miami today.”

The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy to investigate the crash. The agency is expected to hold its first media briefing in Miami on Monday, September 7.
