WASHINGTON, DC: CNN’s Scott Jennings clashed with host Montel Williams during a heated segment on CNN as they debated the motive of Tyler Robinson, the alleged killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The tense exchange happened after host Abby Phillip played a clip of Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray, who described Robinson’s left-wing politics and how they differed from his family’s.

Montel Williams points to emotional motive in Tyler Robinson shooting

Williams pushed back against claims that Tyler Robinson’s actions were politically motivated, insisting they stemmed from personal emotion.

“There’s so much more that needs to be said,” he explained. Referring to Robinson’s text messages, Williams noted, “When asked, ‘How long you thinking about this?’, [he said] a week and a half… It wasn’t, ‘I’ve been thinking about this for the last year and a half.’”

He argued that the narrative was being wrongly politicized: “There are people trying to pigeonhole this as a leftist thing and a right thing… but we’re really talking about a love-torn child, a kid. This is probably his first real relationship, and somebody was disparaging the person that he loved.”

Williams pointed to the timing of the act, saying Robinson waited 30 minutes before reacting: “Why do you wait until the first word ‘trans’ came up, then he took the shot?”

When Phillip asked if Robinson heard the word, Williams replied, “I think he could hear it… I don’t believe he was motivated politically. I think this was motivated emotionally. I think he was an emotionally stunted person who… tried to defend his significant other, not some ideology.”

Scott Jennings blasts Montel Williams’ denial of political motive

Jennings pushed back strongly, rejecting Williams’ take. “Guys, guys… the evidence here is overwhelming."

He said, "'Charlie Kirk, I can’t stand his hate anymore. I’m going to take him out.’ The testimony from him, and the statements of his family, he had become more left-wing."

He said, "He etched the statements that are made by the Left about Republicans, and conservatives, and Charlie Kirk fascist on the bullet casings,” Jennings said.

Williams interjected, “He made a joke about it in his last text.”

Jennings shot back, “Well, it doesn’t sound like a joke to me because someone’s dead and about to be buried. So it doesn’t sound like joke to me!”

Scott Jennings links shooting to left-wing radicalism and trans ideology

Continuing his argument, Jennings accused others of trying to downplay Robinson’s leftist views.

“So I’m just telling you, there is an effort-, there was an effort all weekend long on the left to try to make this guy sound like he was a conservative. That failed. That was passed around all over the weekend, that has now failed," he said.

He added, "The evidence has now come out. He was motivated by hate, he was motivated by left-wing radicalism. He got mixed up with some trans ideology in his life. We’ll learn more about that, I’m sure, when more evidence and testimony comes out."

"We are looking around the edges of this for something other than what’s staring us in the face! Left-wing radicalism got this kid, he went up to a roof, and he murdered our friend, and that’s what happened!” said Jennings.
