Critics slam Trump for declaring Russia wanted to see Ukraine succeed: 'Complete embarrassment'
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Sunday, December 28, faced criticism from several critics for declaring Vladimir Putin's Russia wanted to see Ukraine 'succeed' despite the Russian troops' continuous attack on Kiev.
The POTUS revealed on Sunday that no deal had been reached, but they’re 'very close' to it after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a much-hyped peace summit at Mar-a-Lago.
Critics differ from Trump's claim
President Trump claimed on Sunday that Russia will help with reconstruction in Ukraine after peace is finally achieved. He told reporters, "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. It sounds a little strange but I was explaining to the president, President Putin was very generous in his feeling toward Ukraine succeeding. Including supplying energy, electricity, and other things at very low prices."
Interestingly, several critics online weren't buying the POTUS' claim. Political commentator Armando wrote, "What a complete embarrassment" while sharing Trump's statement.
Analyst Oliver Alexander, in a nod to the bad guy/good guy trope in 'The Lord of The Rings', wrote, "Sauron wants to see Frodo succeed."

Similarly, author Michael Weiss wrote about Volodymyr Zelensky, "He can’t believe he’s up there deciding the fate of millions with a hebephrenic pit boss. And not for the first or last time."

Sarah Longwell of 'The Bulwark' wrote, "Whenever I truly want my neighbor to succeed, I break into his house, brutalize his family, steal his children, and burn his house to the ground while screaming, ‘bro, I’m just trying to help!’"

"Our president is an international calamity," Longwell added.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian commentator @BohuslavskaKate wrote, "About the press conference: Trump is absolutely detached from reality. He doesn’t understand how to end this war or what he is doing. But he visibly enjoys bragging about his relationship with Putin and their sweet phone calls in front of Zelensky. To him, it’s a kind of power flex, but in reality, he is simply admiring a war criminal in front of the president of the victim nation. It doesn’t looks powerful, it looks sadistic and dumb."

Trump says Zelensky has nothing on Russia 'until I approve it'
President Donald Trump, ahead of the weekend meeting at Mar‑a‑Lago on Sunday, told Politico that regardless of what Volodymyr Zelensky proposes during their meeting, the Ukrainian president "doesn’t have anything until I approve it, 'So we’ll see what he’s got.'"
The Ukrainian President has been developing a new 20‑point peace plan to outline potential terms for ending the war, which is a variation of the 28-point plan drafted in November by Trump’s negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
He told reporters that his new 20-point plan intends that "Russia would have to withdraw its forces from a corresponding stretch of land in Donetsk."
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have described the plan as 'an attempt to show flexibility without conceding territory.'
Prior to the meeting, Trump seemed optimistic, saying, "I think it’s going to go good with him. I think it’s going to go good with [Vladimir] Putin," and added that he’ll speak with Russia’s leader 'soon, as much as I want.'
