Democrats prepare for Nancy Pelosi’s exit as possible retirement announcement looms
WASHINGTON, DC: Democrats are quietly bracing for the possible retirement of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, one of the party’s most formidable and consequential figures, as the 85-year-old lawmaker is reportedly expected to announce her future plans following the Tuesday, November 4, elections.
Multiple Democratic sources in Washington and California told NBC News that they believe Pelosi will not seek re-election in 2026, ending nearly four decades of representing her San Francisco district.
“I wish she would stay for 10 more years,” said one California Democrat. “I think she’s out. She’s going to go out with Prop 50 overwhelmingly passing, and what a crowning achievement for her to do that.”
Speculation mounts regarding Nancy Pelosi’s political exit
Pelosi, who served twice as House Speaker and remains a towering figure in Democratic politics, has focused her attention on Proposition 50.
It is a California ballot measure that will redraw congressional districts to allegedly favor Democrats in next year’s midterms. She has reportedly been a leading advocate for the plan, which could deliver her party several additional seats.
Speculation has mounted about her exit since Pelosi refrained from discouraging two Democrats, state Sen Scott Wiener and former tech executive Saikat Chakrabarti, from entering the primary for her seat.
Despite raising more than $2 million this election cycle and retaining a $1.5 million campaign war chest, Pelosi has made no clear moves to run again.
Her recent remarks at a Capitol Hill meeting also hinted at an impending departure.
Joking to colleagues, she said that she was looking forward to watching Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries sworn in as the first Black Speaker of the House “if I’m still allowed on the floor,” she quipped.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that she is a woman who will go down in history as a talented politician, a legislative surgeon. I will miss her greatly. I would like to share with you this photo where she proved to the world… pic.twitter.com/u9sHrfEMIe
“She’s preparing to exit the stage. We will not fully appreciate the time we have spent with her until she’s gone,” said one Democratic leadership aide.
Still, Pelosi’s office has dismissed talk of her retirement as “pure speculation.” Spokesman Ian Krager emphasized that her focus remains solely on winning 'Prop 50'.
Nancy Pelosi’s legacy defined an era
Pelosi’s potential departure would close a defining chapter in Democratic leadership.
During her two decades at the helm from 2002 to 2022, she became the first woman Speaker of the House and reportedly one of its most skilled strategists.
She led Democrats through some of the most turbulent periods in modern US politics, opposing Republican Presidents George W Bush and Donald Trump, while cutting bipartisan deals on issues such as the 2008 bank bailout, clean energy, and trade.
Speaker Pelosi is fully focused on her mission to win the Yes on 50 election in CA. Any discussion of her future plans beyond that mission is pure speculation.

As she has said, Speaker Pelosi will not make any announcements about her future until after Prop 50 is settled.
“Nancy Pelosi is a stateswoman who, as they say about Lincoln, belongs to the ages,” said Rep Ro Khanna, a Bay Area Democrat. “Generations to come will be reading about her contributions to America.”
Pelosi was both feared and revered for her iron discipline. As one colleague recalled, she often said, “I eat nails for breakfast.”
