WASHINGTON, DC: Department of Justice (DOJ) agents searched the home of Representative Ilhan Omar in Washington in an early morning raid as part of a criminal investigation, Fox News reported on Monday, October 12.

The investigation is centered on her immigration paperwork, which dates back to her childhood.

Agents of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the DOJ executed a court-authorized search warrant at Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington, DC area residence.

A video posted by the outlet showed what appeared to be agents in HSI jackets raiding what the portal said was Omar’s residence.

HSI is the principal investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Its scope includes investigating cross-border crime and global threats.

"Today in the Washington, DC, area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation," a DOJ spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Although the raid was court-approved, the nature of the warrant was not clear.

Citing two unnamed sources “close to the investigation,” Fox News reported that the search was related to a criminal fraud investigation concerning Omar’s immigration paperwork, which her late father filled out when she was a child.

Conservative activists have long called for Omar to be stripped of her citizenship and deported to Somalia. Trump and his allies have echoed those calls, accusing her of fraud tied to her family’s immigration history.

The claims Ilhan Omar's critics have pushed for years

The US congresswoman, representing Minnesota in the lower chamber of Congress, has been accused of living illegally in America, given the alleged fraud committed in her immigration paperwork.

Critics and political opponents have long alleged that in 2009, Omar legally married a British citizen named Ahmed Nur Said Elmi for the primary purpose of helping him evade US immigration laws and secure residency.

Born in Somalia, Ilhan Omar was raised in the United States and brought to the country in 90s when she was a child. Omar became a US citizen in 2000 at the age of 17.

The raid comes less than a month before November’s midterm elections. Omar, 44, is seeking another term as a representative for Minnesota’s Fifth District.
