'Doctor Strange' director slams Elon Musk over plans to make AI version of 'The Odyssey'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Doctor Strange' director Scott Derrickson has slammed Elon Musk after he claimed to make an AI version of ‘The Odyssey’, which will be “historically accurate”.

Christopher Nolan's latest movie, starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya, was released on July 17 and has since been widely praised. But clearly, Musk was not happy.

Now calling out the SpaceX CEO, Derrickson wrote on X, “Clearly @elonmusk doesn’t know s**t about cinema & he stopped reading in his 20s. His opinions on art are worthless.”

The filmmaker’s comment came after Musk posted an AI-generated clip adapted from Homer’s epic on X.

It was made by a user of the microblogging site as the 55-year-old businessman wrote, “Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of 'The Odyssey' that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”

Also, when an X user suggested, “I want Elon Musk to give Mel Gibson $100 million to film an Odyssey adaptation with painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek,” the Tesla mogul added, “I’m down.”

Musk has been rallying against Nolan’s latest directorial way before its release while accusing the filmmaker of “woke” casting decisions.

He had even targeted him for casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.

Musk claimed that the 55-year-old “has lost his integrity” after an X user shared, “Helen of Troy was fair-skinned, blonde, and ‘the face that launched a thousand ships’ because she was so beautiful that men started a war over her.”

“Casting choices that make the premise incoherent are admissions that the story was never the point and an insult to the author,” the user had added.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Nolan shared his views against the usage of AI in cinema and how Gen Z’s “judgment of AI slop has been immediate and harsh.”

“They see it for what it is very quickly — and it’s much easier for them to identify it, because it grew out of an online world they know really well. And while that doesn’t mean that every aspect of the technology is useless or meaningless, in film-making it’s hitting at exactly the wrong time,” he reportedly explained. 

Nolan also added, “After years of driving towards heavily virtual environments, we’re seeing a renewed interest in more tactile, more real forms of storytelling.”
