MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN: Former president Donald Trump was formally nominated by the Republican Party as its nominee for the 2024 presidential election on Monday, July 15.

Trump is at the top of the GOP ticket for the third cycle in a row, which cements his position as the standard-bearer of the party, according to Politico. He also became the first convicted felon to become a major-party presidential nominee.

While unsurprising, Trump's nomination comes at a remarkable moment, as he faced an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13.

Roadblocks to Trump's 2024 candidacy

While Donald Trump has been working his way toward bagging the GOP nomination since leaving office in 2021, the journey has been scarcely easy.

The Capitol building riot of January 6, 2021, and attempts to overturn the 2020 election results made many Republicans, including some presidential hopefuls denounce Trump. The GOP lost both the House and the Senate during his presidency and was later only able to win back the House with a smaller-than-expected margin. These incidents labeled Trump as politically toxic.

In addition, Trump has been facing a slew of legal troubles. The controversial businessman was convicted at his criminal hush money trial in New York back in May. Charges have been brought against him by federal and state prosecutors in Georgia and Washington related to his efforts to overturn the election.

Trump was also charged with storing classified documents at his resort in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, and then obstructing the inquiry.

A large number of Republicans also contended against Trump in the 2024 primaries and challenged his leadership. These included the likes of Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Mike Pence, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Tim Scott.

Turning the tide in Donald Trump's favor

Donald Trump was easily able to dominate his competition in the primaries, and most of his earlier rivals even pledged their support for him later.

He leaned into the narrative of political weaponization of the justice system to gather support surrounding his indictments and convictions.

The legal and political wins of the former president have grown steadily as the SCOTUS ruled him immune from prosecution for official actions taken during his term in office.

High court justices ruled against states removing from the ballot back in March.

Trump also had his classified documents case dismissed, just two days after his miraculous survival in an assassination attempt. The outpouring of support following the incident has been immediate, and Trump has been declared the official nominee of the party.

Internet states Donald Trump was the obvious choice

Donald Trump's nomination seemed to be obvious, with the Republican Party rallying after him for months. Netizens mockingly feigned surprise over the announcement on Facebook.

"Omg I was so worried. The race was so close. We totally didn’t see this coming and my sarcasm sucks," wrote a user.

"Nothing new... We all knew you guys are in love with that thin skinned clown," jibed another.

"Was there any doubt?" asked a third.

"Wow! Earth-shattering development!" said a fourth.

"Ooh that was a real cliffhanger for a while. I was certain they were going to pick Mike Pence for President," another person added.
