Donald Trump claims egg prices fell 87% as he admits he was unaware of soaring rates before taking office

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump raised eyebrows as he admitted he was unaware of soaring egg prices, a key concern for many Americans, after returning to the White House during his National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) dinner speech on Tuesday, April 8.
"Eggs, not a very glamorous thing to talk about, but eggs," the 78-year-old commander-in-chief said, pausing mid-speech. "I was in for one week, and they said, 'Egg prices are soaring.' I said, 'I've just been here I didn't know this,'" reports Irish Star.

Donald Trump continued, "Let me know about it, what's going on with eggs, tell me. So they gave me a little bit of a thing, and it's true under Biden, they soared like doubled tripled quadrupled, you couldn't even get them."
Trump’s comments also included praise for Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins. "Well, we have a wonderful secretary of agriculture as you know, Brooke Rollins... When she goes after something, we don't play games, and uh, egg prices are down now 87%, and you have all the eggs you want," the POTUS said.
"87% and they didn't write about they don't talk about it... I make speeches about eggs all the time, I never get a reporter writing about it because we were successful," he claimed.

His statement that egg prices dropped 87% since his return to office directly contradicts federal data. According to the Consumer Price Index, egg prices have surged to a record average of $5.90 per dozen, driven largely by supply chain issues and a devastating avian flu outbreak.
Since January, over 30 million egg-laying hens have been culled to contain the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the USDA. In total, more than 166 million birds have been wiped out nationwide, leaving shelves short and prices high.
The Trump administration did roll out a response plan in February aimed at curbing the outbreak, but its impact is still unclear. Critics say it came too late.
"Donald Trump promised to lower food prices on ‘Day One,’ but with egg prices skyrocketing out of control, he fired the workers charged with containing bird flu. Working families need relief now," said Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren in a statement.
The USDA recently reported that the national flock of egg layers has dropped by more than 12%, with numbers falling below 292 million. That figure has likely shrunk even further after an additional 11 million birds were killed in March alone.
Donald Trump says 'countries are calling up to kiss my a**' while defending tariffs
During his NRCC speech, Donald Trump made a brash assertion that international leaders are scrambling to negotiate with him due to his aggressive trade policies.
"These countries are calling me up, kissing my a**… they are dying to make a deal," the MAGA leader said to a room of GOP donors. "Please, please, sir, make a deal. I’ll do anything."

Trump referred to the current tariff standoff as both a "good" and a "legendary situation," defending his administration’s use of tariffs as strategic leverage. On the policies, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, "Bring us your best offers and he will listen."
Trump addressed the backlash over imposing a staggering 104% tariff on China, admitting it might "sound ridiculous," but argued it was fair retaliation for years of alleged trade imbalances. "China has ripped us off left and right. Now it’s our turn to do the rippin’," he declared.
