Donald Trump, GOP criticize Kamala Harris for being depicted as possible successor amid Biden's scrutiny
WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris is taking a lot of flak from former President Donald Trump for being depicted as a possible successor while President Joe Biden is under intense scrutiny following his disastrous debate performance and subsequent stumbles during his eagerly awaited NATO "big boy press conference."
In both cases, Harris would take over for Biden in the event that he resigned from office. Should Biden decide not to run for reelection in 2024, Harris would also be a strong candidate for the Democratic nomination. According to a nationwide survey conducted by CNN last week, Harris would fare marginally better than Biden in a fictitious matchup with Trump, reports Fox News.
Donald Trump called out Joe Biden and mocked VP Kamala Harris recently
In a Truth Social post, Trump referred to Vice President as "Laffin' Kamala Harris" and congratulated her, saying that Biden had "choked like a dog" during the debate. In the past, Trump has given his rivals a variety of monikers such as "Sleepy Joe" [Biden], "Crooked Hillary" [Clinton], and "Low Energy Jeb" [Bush].
"Also, respects to our potentially new Democrat Challenger, Laffin’ Kamala Harris," he said, adding "She did poorly in the Democrat Nominating process, starting out at Number Two, and ending up defeated and dropping out, even before getting to Iowa, but that doesn’t mean she’s not a ‘highly talented’ politician!"
Donald Trump also focused on Kamala Harris during recent rallies
In addition, Harris has been the subject of the former president's attention at recent rallies. In a leaked video, he even refers to Harris as "so f*****g bad."
Trump launched a more pointed attack on Harris at his campaign rally on Tuesday night, July 9, denouncing her deputy record and charging that she is an extreme left-wing ally of Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Additionally, Trump hinted that Biden will probably continue to run since Democrats won't support Harris.
"If Joe had picked someone even halfway competent, they would have bounced him from office years ago," Trump said during the rally, adding "But they can’t – because she’s got to be their second choice."
The National Republican Congressional Committee also took a dig at Kamala Harris
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) released an advertisement last week titled "Careful for what you wish for," labeling Harris as "Biden's enabler in chief" and portraying her as the "architect" of the migrant crisis at the southern border. The Trump campaign has not yet released any advertisements criticizing Harris as a possible Biden replacement.
"Is this who we want as president?" the advertisement said, adding "This November: Vote Republican. Stop Kamala."
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris recently shifted their focus to Donald Trump's 2025 project
Both Biden and Harris have attempted to divert attention in recent weeks by linking Trump to the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025. This is not only because they believe it will help Biden overcome his mounting pressure, but also because they believe it will resonate with moderate swing state voters who have the power to win the election.
"Trump’s advisers have created a 900-page blueprint — called ‘Project 2025’ — detailing everything else they plan to do in a second term, including a plan to cut Social Security, repeal our $35 cap on insulin, eliminate the Department of Education and end programs like Head Start," Harris said at a campaign stop in Nevada on Tuesday, July 9.
But Trump has distanced himself from the Heritage plan, calling some of its components "abysmal" and "ridiculous."
Before the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle, many lawmakers from Capitol Hill had doubts about Biden's mental acuity, according to a shocking Wall Street Journal report that the White House rejected. This led to increased discussion about Biden's mental health. Biden has repeatedly said he will remain in the race.
Internet strongly against the idea of Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee
Netizens expressed their disappointment over the idea that Harris may replace Biden as the Democratic nominee amid the 81-year-old's mounting health concerns. Biden's political rivals and even his allies, both have revealed concerns about Biden's capability to serve another four years for the country.
One X user wrote, "There is no way Harris could be elected President. Democrats are wasting their time if they think for one minute that could happen. Republicans are wasting their time too going after her. She's an annoying, lying, stupid, worthless individual who has accomplished nothing as VP."
"Democrats have no choice for Biden," another echoed the same. "How in the heck is her polls rising she was one of the most hated ppl ... and given odd ball jobs bc she was unable to handle them. Look at their hugs 2 u can tell they don't care for one another," remarked one user. "Her rise in popularity? What popularity. Come on," wrote someone else.
A user opined, "Not to worry. Jill Biden will prevent Joe from stepping down. She loves being the First Lady too much to let go. Sad but true."
